Eagle Scouts

Left: Three new Eagle Scouts were recognized in a Court of Honor on Dec. 19. From left: Parker Schimpff, Dominic Holder and Trinity Nalley. Right: Trinity Nalley is the first girl to become an Eagle Scout in Grant County. Her brothers Asher, left, and Keenan had the privilege of placing her Eagle neckerchief and slide on her at the Court of Honor officially making her an Eagle Scout.

Five years ago, girls were welcomed to join Boy Scouts. The organization officially became Scouts BSA on Feb. 1, 2019.

In Williamstown, there is a boys' troop (Troop 712) and a girls' troop (Troop 1712).

Several girls have joined and worked their way up through the ranks. Last fall, Trinity Nalley became the first local girl to make Eagle Scout. She joined Parker Schimpff and Dominic Holder in a special Court of Honor ceremony recognizing their new rank as Eagle Scouts.

It's not a rank many scouts attain. To become an Eagle Scout requires being under the age of 18, attaining the rank of Life Scout, earning 21 merit badges, displaying outdoor skills, demonstrating by example the Scout Oath and Law, holding a leadership rank in the troop and completing a significant service project in the community.

Only an estimated 6% of scouts will go through the process and successfully earn the rank of Eagle Scout.

Several Grant County scouts have recently become Eagle Scouts. The projects they completed have enriched the community in a variety of ways:

-Trinity Nalley, who made Eagle Scout on Nov. 6, restored the Harrison Ship Family Cemetery in Grant County.

- Graham Bitler completed an outdoor chapel at Williamstown Christian Church.

- CJ Tein provided much-needed shelving at the Grant county Animal Shelter.

- Parker Schimpf put a roof on the American Legion shed.

- Henry Lambert constructed handicap accessible picnic tables at Grant Manor.

- Dominic Holder made shade covers over benches at Cocoa Dog Park in Williamstown last summer.

- Bradley Reeves created seating for Wetlands Outdoor Learning Center.

- Ben Thoroughman designed and blazed a self-guided trail and tree identification at Sherman Tavern.

- Nathan Reeves made archery target stands for Curtis Gates Lloyd Wildlife Management Area.

- Jeffrey Kinman created outdoor bench seating for Williamstown Elementary.

- Abe Thoroughman stained/painted the wheelchair ramp and lined the flower bed at the historic log cabin in Williamstown.

- Nick Dalton has also made Eagle Scout but information on his project was unavailable at the time of the paper's deadline.
