The Grant County School Board met April 11 and approved the last day of school for students as Friday, May 17.
Graduation will take place that evening. Superintendent Matt Morgan said they are planning for an indoor graduation, but “If it’s pretty we’ll move it outside.”
The Summer Feeding Program will begin the week after school dismisses.
Ehmet Hayes of Robert Ehmet Hayes & Associates presented a construction update.
Of the change order on the agenda for the Career and Technical Center, he said, “You’re doing outstanding on overall change orders.” Of the original contingency, only 1% has been used, leaving $589,000.
He reported that brickwork is complete, as is the base layer of the roof. Final grading will take place when the weather improves so that blacktopping can occur.
The change order involved an abnormally thick later of concrete that had to be dug out. The concrete was four or five inches thicker than the average five inch thickness. Instead of incurring the expense of replacing the same depth of concrete, stone will be used to fill the space.
Also, Hayes said a couple of electric circuits got “nipped” in the process of concrete removal and had to be replaced.
Ceiling tiles were not in the original plan but needed replacing in order to match the new tiles.
“Pretty much everything is looking to be wrapped up in July” on the exterior, Hayes said. There will be some interior work through November.
He continued with an update of the overhaul of Dry Ridge Elementary.
“They’re making good headway,” he said, adding that the “numbers look really good.” This refers to the spending on change orders. Of the $759,000 in contingency, $745,000 remains; only .9% has been used.
Hayes noted there are three different brick colors and a variety of trim colors on the metal.
He suggested painting it all to match if contingency money is remaining at the end of the project.
He said the board should consider adding an I.P. video door station for the Family Resource Center at a cost of $8,000. He also mentioned a couple of heat pumps were in odd positions and had to be repositioned.
Timetables for DRE are harder to pinpoint, Hayes said, as they are “leap-frogging through the building.”
The main building will be pretty much done over the summer and the 300 wings through Christmas.
Work will continue through winter and spring of 2025, winding up in summer.
