It may not be March yet, but the Lady Demons are getting prepared for the 8th Region All “A” Classic tournament Jan. 13 at Walton-Verona High School.

Williamstown will face Owen County in the semi-final match at 7 p.m.

Lady Demons coach Mark Wilhoit wants his team to play a complete game like they did against Simon Kenton Jan. 8, losing 54-44.

“Even though we lost to Simon Kenton, I thought our girls played really tough on defense,” he said. “We were mentally and physically tough. I saw that for 32 minutes against Simon Kenton, not so much with the Walton-Verona game.”

One of the Lady Demons that is beginning to see more playing time under Wilhoit is sophomore forward Alex Prokopchak.

“Alex has really stepped up for us,” he said. “She is really playing well for us.”

Wilhoit said he believed that Prokopchak was going to play a pivotal role going into the season.

“The coaches and I took our time with her,” he said. “She has really picked up her game and she gives us valuable minutes coming off the bench.”

Prokopchak contributes her effective play to her growth over the past two years,.

“It helps with playing time,” she said. “I can go in for Tori Wilhoit or Chelsea West when they get hurt or are in foul trouble.”

Prokopchak has grown eight inches the past two years and she says that growth has helped her play different roles on the team.

“I use to be able to guard the little girls,” she said. “I can guard both positions now with the transition.”

With the All “A” Classic coming up, Prokopchak said the matchup with Owen County being a test of  the Lady Demons’ skills.

The winner of the Williamstown/Owen County game will advance to the championship game at WVHS Jan. 15. Admission is $5.
