On a bitterly cold March 18, the South Oldham Lady Dragons downed the Lady Braves 9-3 at the Grant County High School softball field.

  • VAUGHT’S VIEWS

Dominique Hawkins is not Kentucky’s star player going into this week’s NCAA Tournament play.
However, he could turn out to be UK’s most important player.

The showcase players are freshmen Malik Monk, De’Aaron Fox and Bam Adebayo. They are UK’s top scorers and all are considered likely No. 1 NBA draft picks in June. They’ve all been the subject of national media features and certainly will be put in the spotlight by CBS-TV.

  • VAUGHT’S VIEWS

Kentucky football coach Mark Stoops isn’t ready to even think about a quarterback controversy one week into his team’s spring practice.

Stephen Johnson took over last season after Drew Barker got hurt and led UK to wins in seven of its final 11 games. He obviously went into spring practice No. 1, especially with Barker coming off offseason back surgery.

  • Lady Braves defeat Owen, make...

A balanced scoring attack led the Grant County Lady Braves to making history March 3 by advancing to the program’s first-ever regional final after defeating Owen County in the semi-finals.
It was the first time in 24 years the Lady Braves had made it to the regional semi-finals.

“It’s big because the girls’ program hasn’t made it this far before, but it’s something we have wanted to do and talk about often,” Lady Braves Coach Shawn West said.

  • Grant’s postseason ends one step...

The magical postseason run for the Grant County Lady Braves ended March 4 when they ran into a powerful Simon Kenton team.

In a rematch of the 32nd district championship, the Lady Braves struggled to put up points and fell 69-22 to the Lady Pioneers.

It was the third time this season Simon Kenton had defeated Grant, who lost 71-35 back in January and  65-35 in the district championship.
Lady Braves Coach Shawn West said that the Lady Pioneers’ pressure and depth are what bothers his team the most.

  • Demons lose in regional battle

The Williamstown Demons took on their nemesis for the year in Gallatin County on March 1 in the first round of 8th Region action at Henry County High School.

The Demons lost for the third time this season to the Wildcats by the score of 58-53.
The Demons had to be disappointed in their endeavor to beat the Wildcats after winning their last game against them by four points at home just three weeks ago.

  • Lady Braves advance in regional...

It has been 25 years since the Lady Braves basketball team has advanced to the second round of the regional tournament. This year’s team did the exact same thing when they took on a good team with a 24-4 record Trimble County on Feb. 28 at Oldham County High School.  The Lady Braves won that contest by the score of 64-53.
