  • Gregg resigns as Grant County...

    After 18 seasons coaching on various levels and various schools, including both Williamstown and Grant County high schools, Marlin Gregg is officially hanging up his cleats, resigning at the end of the Grant County High School softball season.

    Gregg, who is also the assistant principal at Grant County High School, plans to pursue other opportunities. He was named the softball coach following the resignation of Ott Reed last season.

  • Walters overcomes injuries,...

    Lacy Walters knows how it feels to have something you love taken away.

    As a freshman member of the University of the Cumberlands softball team, Walter underwent surgery to repair two tears in her labrum, putting her career on hold for a season. The labrum is a lip-like projection of cartilage on the shoulder blade.

  • Gridiron Gang—GCMS...

    A season removed from an unprecedented undefeated record, the Grant County Middle School football team picked up right where it left off with a strong showing in its spring game on May 16.

    Tyler Robinson, who rushed for approximately 2,200 yards and 38 touchdowns last season, showed no signs of rust, rushing for over 100 yards and three touchdowns. In two spring games, Robinson has rushed for nine touchdowns.

    Also playing well offensively was Dustin Haar, who played tight end and halfback and rushed for a 75-yard touchdown.

  • GCHS' Cummins headed to...

    For four seasons, Josh Cummins has played the game of baseball with one goal in mind—to attract the interest of a college baseball coach.

    In addition to helping the Grant County High School baseball team win games, Cummins accomplished his goal, earning the attention of Asbury College, Hanover College, Spalding College and Brescia University.

    "I always wanted to play college baseball and go as far as I can in the sport. This is a dream come true," Cummins said.

  • Florence Freedom ready for season

    The last time anyone saw the Florence Freedom, they had lost 6-1 to the Chillicothe Paints in the regular season finale on their way to a disappointing 42-54 season.

    "We battled injuries from spring training and it steam rolled last season. Our offense was not as productive early in the season. We started playing good midseason and we were happy with how we were playing at the time," Florence manager Jamie Keefe said of last year.

    This year, Keefe is hopeful the Freedom will contend for the Frontier League championship, however, he knows the team will have its hands full.

  • Braves seek 20 wins on the...

    While there are those surprised with how the Grant County High School baseball team has fared this season, Van Duncan is not one of them.

    Duncan, who is in his first season as coach, inherited a team that won 12 games last season. However, he did not let previous seasons dictate his expectationssetting goals of 20 wins and contending for a district championship this season.

  • Martin eyes success on the links...

    As a child, Jeremy Martin would often play golf, dreaming of the day when the sport he loved would pay for his education.

    That dream became a reality on May 12 as Martin, a senior golfer at Grant County High School, signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Northern Kentucky University.

    "It's exciting. I knew for a while I was going to Northern Kentucky University, but it's good to make it official," said Martin, the son of Todd and Elizabeth Martin.

  • GCMS boys' soccer team...

    When the boys' soccer season began, Grant County Middle School coach Anna Day knew her team would undergo several changes as a result of losing many eighth graders.

    Despite the losses in personnel, the Braves have a full roster of 23 players, many of whom have played little or no soccer, according to Day.

    "However, many players have made great strides. The players have really improved their skills since the beginning of the season, and it is great to see the transition of skills as the season progresses," Day said.

  • Grant County, Williamstown eye...

    The last two seasons, Williamstown and Grant County have faced each other in the 32nd District softball championship game, and the same could happen again this season.

    However, the two will have to pull off upsets in their first round games in order for the trend to continue as the 32nd District Tournament begins May 19 at Simon Kenton High School.
