  • Loss does not deter Williamstown...

    An eight-minute stretch was all it took for the Williamstown High School boys' basketball team to go from contenders to being knocked out of the 8th Region All "A" Classic on Jan. 23.

    Holding onto a slim 25-23 lead heading into the third quarter, the Demons quickly found themselves trailing 51-39 en route to a 67-56 loss to Carroll County. The defeat dropped Williamstown to 2-13 on the season heading into this week.

  • Williamstown's Stith...

    Jaclyn Stith had no idea.

    "I don't keep count of my points," said Stith.

    After getting fouled during Williamstown High School's game against North Oldham on Jan. 21, Stith, a junior member of the Lady Demons basketball team, calmly toed the foul line, sinking a free-throw.

    The buzzer sounded. Only then did Stith know for sure that she had just recorded her 1,000th career point. The free-throw was just one of her 23 points in the Lady Demons' 45-40 loss.

  • WHS JV boys garner championship

    Hard work, attention to detail and a little believing have gone a long way for the Williamstown boys' junior varsity basketball team this season and they have a championship to show for it.

    Recently, the Demons went 2-0 en route to capturing the Trimble County Invitational.The championship crown came as no surprise to head coach Dustin Plunkett.

    "Everybody played extremely well and the kids did what they were supposed to do. We won because everybody did their part," said Plunkett.

  • Williamstown boys' team...

    Numerous times this season, Williamstown High School boys' basketball coach Stacey May had preached to his team the importance of playing until the final buzzer had sounded, regardless of the score.

    On Jan. 15, the Demons (2-12) heeded the message, rallying back from a 14-point deficit to post a 44-43 victory over Lloyd Memorial. The win erased a three-game losing streak and doubled the total win output from last season, something that was not lost on the mind of senior forward Patrick Gatewood.

  • Williamstown Demons eye All...

    It began with a discussion as to what the goals would be for this year's Williamstown High School boys' basketball team and despite the fact that the Demons are 0-4 against four of the other six teams involved in the 8th Region All "A" Classic, the goal has not diminished—win the All "A" and advance to the state tournament in Richmond.

  • Seniors prepare for final girls...

    A lot has happened since the last time the Grant County and Williamstown girls' basketball teams met each other on the hardwood on Dec. 14, 2007, at Grant County. Grant County won 51-44.

    For starters, the Williamstown Lady Demons entered the week with a 5-11 overall, 0-4 district record, and while they have lost seven of their last 11, the Lady Demons enter having won two of their last three and advanced to the finals of the All "A" Classic last week.

  • Area players earn college...

    A successful season on the field is bringing the attention of several colleges for the Grant County High School football team.

    Head coach Mike Davis said that six of his seven seniors have attracted college interest and while no offers have been made, he expects several before National Signing Day on Feb. 6.

  • Lady Braves battle on

    The Grant County High School girls' basketball team does not need any reminders about how big this week is for them and their hopes of attaining a high seed in the 32nd District Tournament.

    "We have to play hard in two big district games. It's a huge week for us," senior Bethany Hopperton said.

    Darrell Guffey's squad entered this week with a 5-12 overall, 1-3 district record following losses last week to Pendleton County and Spencer County.

  • Lady Demons fall just short of...

    Tears streamed down the faces of Chelsea West, Jaclyn Stith and Tori Wilhoit. The tears that welled in Mark Wilhoit's eyes told the story for the Williamstown High School girls' basketball team.

    After 32 minutes and falling behind by as many as 13, the Lady Demons fell just short of upsetting Trimble County High School at Trimble County in the finals of the 8th Region All "A" Classic.

  • Latest Score: Braves fall to...

    For three quarters, the Grant County High School boys' basketball team could do no wrong, building a 42-29 lead over District 32 opponent Walton-Verona on Jan. 4.

    When the dust settled, Walton-Verona walked away victorious, capturing a 69-62 victory that featured a bizarre ending to regulation and a technical foul on Grant County head coach Ron Kinmon in overtime.
