Remember when it was fun being a teenager trying to make a decision on where to attend college? Remember when athletes would sign with a college in front of just family and friends and not with the whole media circus that recruiting outlets and ESPN have provided over the years? Remember when National Signing Day didn't resemble the NFL draft, listing each player's strengths and weaknesses and turning high school gyms into sound stages on which recruits usually embarrass themselves by throwing hats off a table, yelling, "I can't go to (fill in your choice of school)"?

The month of February was to have been the breakthrough month for the Williamstown High School boys' basketball team, the month where the Demons picked up the wins needed to achieve their goal of 10 wins on the season.

Instead, the beginning of the month has brought nothing but losses and a bizarre situation against a district opponent for the Demons, who will use this week to practice on fundamentals before looking to improve on their 3-18 record.

The goal was simple for the Williamstown and Grant County girls' basketball teams this season—put yourself in a position where you did not have to open the 32nd District Tournament against heavy favorite Simon Kenton.

Both failed that goal, but the question of who will play Simon Kenton when the tournament opens on Feb. 25 will be decided on Feb. 17 at the district meeting, where coaches will draw for district seeds in the tournament, which will be played at Grant County High School.

Candace Gorby will never forget the events that transpired on Jan. 15.

The Grant County High School girls' basketball junior point guard had just recorded a steal from Pendleton County's point guard when she headed up the court for what appeared to be an easy layup.

That is until she heard two pops in her knee.

"I went in to do a spin move and my foot stayed planted while my knee turned. I knew after I heard the pops that it wasn't good," said Gorby.
