  • Braves seek upset of Simon...

    A little more than a month ago, with his team in the midst of a four-game losing streak, Grant County junior Cody Kinman made a bold statement, "We have not played to our potential, but come district time we should be ready, and I think we are going to shock the 8th region this year."

    Fast forward one month later, and it appears as if Kinman's words are beginning to ring true as Grant County will enter the 32nd District Tournament not only with some momentum, but with quality wins against region opponents Gallatin County, Henry County and Carroll County.

  • GCHS seniors are not ready to...

    Grant County High School girls' basketball seniors Salena McIntosh, Sarah Johnson and Bethany Hopperton don't need to be reminded what is at stake when the Lady Braves host Walton-Verona at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26, in the first round of the 32nd District Tournament. Walton-Verona will be the number two seed, while the Lady Braves are the number three seed.

  • WHS Lady Demons seek strong...

    Despite picking up eight wins, which was one more than last season, the Williamstown High School girls' basketball team is nowhere near being satisfied.

    At 8-17 overall heading into this week, coach Mark Wilhoit and his players know they have let too many games slip away as a result of either not knocking down shots or committing too many unforced turnovers. That is what has drawn the ire of the Lady Demons.

  • Lady Braves continue to roll

    In their final regular season game, Grant County girls' basketball seniors Salena McIntosh, Sarah Johnson and Bethany Hopperton had their cake and ate it too.

    Moments after defeating North Oldham 46-36, the three seniors, along with their teammates and coach Darrell Guffey, enjoyed cake and ice cream, celebrating the team's accomplishments this season. Those accomplishments include improving to 8-15 Monday night on a season that has seen the Lady Braves riddled with injuries and illness.

    This was the kind of stretch the Grant County High School boys' basketball team needed.

    And this is exactly how head coach Ron Kinmon and his Braves wanted to play. Any question about how good Grant County could be were answered not so much in the five games they won since Feb. 5, but more in their performance against Gallatin County.

  • Lady Demons aim to shock...

    Rather than feel sorry for themselves after drawing top seeded Simon Kenton in the 32nd District Tournament Tuesday, Feb. 26, the Williamstown High School girls' basketball team is viewing the encounter as an opportunity to shock the district. In two meetings this season, Simon Kenton has defeated the Lady Demons 75-28 and 85-40.

    "We controlled our own destiny in the district, and we blew it. We can't blame anyone but ourselves," coach Mark Wilhoit said.

    The last time the Williamstown High School boys' basketball team won a game in the 32nd District Tournament was 2005, when the Demons defeated Owen County 63-49.

  • GCHS opens 'Spring Training...

    Fans of the Grant County High School varsity baseball team will notice a new face in the dugout and along the third base line as Van Duncan will look to improve on last season's 12-13 record when the Braves open their practice on Friday.

    Duncan replaces Rich Williamson, who resigned after two years at the helm, and hopes his excitement will transfer to his players this spring.

    Remember when it was fun being a teenager trying to make a decision on where to attend college? Remember when athletes would sign with a college in front of just family and friends and not with the whole media circus that recruiting outlets and ESPN have provided over the years? Remember when National Signing Day didn't resemble the NFL draft, listing each player's strengths and weaknesses and turning high school gyms into sound stages on which recruits usually embarrass themselves by throwing hats off a table, yelling, "I can't go to (fill in your choice of school)"?

  • 'We are all really...

    Scott Shipp has seen a lot of storms, however, nothing prepared him for the damage he witnessed as he made his way to Grant County High School on Feb. 6.

    The GCHS athletic director arrived at the high school at 5:30 a.m. and met with Deputy Superintendent Ken Gray, who told Shipp to check on the athletic fields.

    It did not take Shipp long to see there was plenty of damage.
