    A: Our top returning runner this year is junior Natalie Norman. Last year, as a sophomore, she was the regional champion in the 800 meter run and finished third in the Class AAA state meet running a personal best time of 2:21.

    As a 7-year-old in Owen County, Bobby Young knew he would be a baseball player, but never once did he imagine having a career that would take him from Owen County to Thomas More College and then onto the Major League Baseball stage.

  • Lady Demons open softball...

    With a combination of five returning players and several new faces, Williamstown High School softball coach Mark Wilhoit is excited when talking about what the 2008 softball season could hold in store for the Lady Demons.

    "We have good numbers this season with 20-21 players coming out for practice. Of those, a few are new players who can help us. We've got five juniors and two pitchers back," Wilhoit said.

    The five juniors include Amanda Goodrich, Jaclyn Stith, Emily Webster, Amber Vance and Ashlee Holt.

  • Williamstown baseball will lean...

    When Williamstown High School baseball coach Buck Walter discusses this year's team, he casts an eye toward the pitcher's mound and smiles.

    The reason?

    Williamstown brings back senior pitcher Michael Walter, who last year set the school record for strikeouts in a season and is also drawing attention from several colleges. In addition, the Demons will lean on the arm of sophomore Joel Price, who Walter says is "a crafty guy."

    Grant County High School baseball coach Van Duncan has two goals heading into the regular season opener on March 25.

    One his team can control—making Grant County High School and the Grant County School District proud.

    The other depends solely on whether or not the weather will cooperate with the Braves, allowing them to get some time on the field.

    "The weather has greatly limited what we can and can't do, but the players have been extremely flexible and we've had some good indoor practices," said Duncan.

  • Grant County's Thompson...

    When he had doubts about whether or not he could adapt as a starting player this season, Grant County High School junior Kody Thompson thought back to his childhood and the guidance he got from his parents.

    "When I was old enough to pick up a basketball, I began playing. A lot of that has to do with my parents, who got me interested and pushed me to be the player I am today. It was a scary experience when I started, but I have learned to love it. I love playing basketball with my teammates. It has been a combined effort between me and my parents," said Thompson.

    A combination of straight-line winds, rain and snow has Mother Nature one up on the county's spring sporting teams with their respective opening days two weeks away.

    The weather has created headaches for coaches, who have tried to plan practices and scrimmages only to be forced either indoors or to cancel the events altogether.

  • Grant County girls squad looks...

    The record may indicate that the Grant County High School girls' basketball team finished the season with a 9-18 record, but coach Darrell Guffey viewed his first season as a success, especially when one considers all the Lady Braves endured this season.

    "We rode a roller-coaster all season long, and at times, it was a very tough ride," Guffey said.

    The "roller-coaster ride" began early in the season as injuries and illness decimated Grant County and continued when junior point guard Candace Gorby was lost for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
