  • Lady Braves seek tourney title

    The Grant County High School softball team has high aspirations heading into the Lady Braves Classic, which will be held April 26-27 at Grant County High School.

    In addition to Grant County, other teams in the tournament include Bishop Brossart, Highlands and East Jessamine. The format for this year's tournament is a four-team round robin, with each team playing three games. All places will be determined by the team that wins the most games.

  • Lady Braves earn first place

    Backed by several strong individual and relay team finishes, the Grant County High School girls' track team sent a notice to the rest of the Northern Kentucky—they are for real.

    The message came after the Lady Braves scored 140.5 points to run away with the Grant County Invitational on April 12. The next closest team was Villa Madonna, who amassed 76 points.

    Grant County ended the event with six first place finishes.

  • Swept Away—Grant...

    With the swing of a bat, Grant County's slim 2-1 advantage turned into a 4-1 lead with little sign of letting up Tuesday night.

    Following a double by Jessica Smith to open the third inning, Grant County junior Alesa Collinsworth took the first pitch she saw from Williamstown pitcher Emma Harris and belted a two-run home run, sparking a seven run inning to lift Grant County to a 16-7 win over the Lady Demons.

  • Former WHS standout learns the...

    It did not take long for Jacob Cheesman to realize he was no longer a member of the Williamstown High School baseball team.

    In his first season as a member of the junior varsity baseball team at Lindsey Wilson College, Cheesman found out early that college baseball is a year-round sport.

    "I like that aspect of it. At Williamstown, it was something we did three months and then that was it. Here, there's a fall and spring season and a lot of other time that goes into it," said Cheesman.

  • Roy continues family tradition

    While she is only a freshman, Kaitlyn Roy understands what it means to wear a Grant County High School softball uniform, step inside the pitcher's circle and be the top pitcher for the Lady Braves.

    Roy, who pitched on the junior varsity level last year, got plenty of lessons watching her sister, Chelsea, throw strikes and win games for the Lady Braves a season ago. When Chelsea graduated and moved on to Northern Kentucky University, it was Kaitlyn's turn to continue the family tradition.

  • Despite strong start, Grant...

    Grant County baseball coach Van Duncan is a firm believer in the adage that a baseball season is a marathon and not a sprint.

    However, he does like the way his team has sprinted out of the gate, amassing a 7-2 mark heading into this week's games. Of the seven victories, three came in six innings, including two 10-0 wins over both Williamstown and Simon Kenton, who are 32nd District opponents. The Braves upended Owen County 6-0 in frigid conditions on Monday evening.

    For Michael Schultz, the Humana Mini-Heart Marathon is not just another race.

    Instead, it's a way to keep his grandmother's tradition alive, and the Grant County High School track-and-field freshman competitor got a little help from his friends during this season's event, as he was able to find several teammates to raise money for the competition.

  • Williamstown defeats ranked Boyd...

    Williamstown baseball coach Buck Walter thought he had seen all there was to see on a baseball diamond.

    That is until his team headed into last week's game against Boyd County, which was ranked by several publications in the top 20 in the state. Knowing that the game would serve as an indicator for his squad, Walter took the field expecting a strong showing from the Demons.

    What he got surprised the veteran coach, leaving him giddy after he watched his team beat Boyd County 2-1 in the Cocoa Expo in Cocoa Beach, Fla.

    The weather may be less than perfect, but it has not dampened the spirit of the Legends baseball team, a 12-and-under select team.

    The Legends, coached by Greg Carr, recently captured the championship at the Second Annual Early Bird Tournament at Northern Kentucky Sports Park.

  • Delivering a Message—...

    The senior members of the Grant County High School baseball team remembered their emotions following last year's two losses to 32nd District rival Williamstown.

    There were some tears, but mostly just a big empty, hollow feeling.

    On Monday evening, the roles were reversed as Grant County extracted revenge on the Demons, roughing up five pitchers and pounding out 12 hits en route to a 10-0 six inning victory at Williamstown.

    The victory was the first for Grant County since the 2006 season.
