    Grant County High School has been at its present location since 1998, but it wasn't until May 1, 2008, that the Braves hosted a baseball game at the facility.

    The wait was well worth it for the Braves and coach Van Duncan, as Grant County jumped out to an early lead and held off Scott High School 3-2 to claim not only its 13th win of the season, but also it's first 'home' victory in a game that featured Grant County School Board Deputy Superintendent Ken Gray throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

  • Lady Braves win second meet of...

    Emily Yaeger could not control her emotions.

    The Grant County High School girls' track and field senior had finally achieved a goal she set when the season began, helping the Lady Braves win not only the 4x400-meter relay, but also the Conner High School Cougar Invitational on April 26.

    As she walked out of the gate, she broke down and cried.

  • Demons end mixed week with a...

    A week of mixed results ended on a high note for the Williamstown High School baseball team.

    The Demons, who brought a 10-11 record into this week, suffered losses to both Trimble County (4-3) and 32nd District opponent Simon Kenton (17-4 in five innings), however, those feelings were replaced by joy following a 4-3 win over 8th Region opponent Henry County on May 1.

  • Youth Soccer League continues to...

    The 2008 spring soccer season has been a banner year for the Grant County Youth Soccer League, as there has been an increase in the total number of participants, according to league president Terry Purcell.

    This spring, over 350 children are involved in the league.

    "The spring season is usually low because of baseball, but this is the largest group we have had. It is also the first time we have had a float in the Derby Day Parade," Purcell said.

    The 350 children comprise to form 29 total teams, ranging from Under-4 to Under-14 teams.

  • Demonized—Williamstown...

    There are tough losses and then there's what happened to the Grant County High School baseball team on April 25 by the hands of 32nd District and county rival Williamstown.

    Three weeks removed from dispatching the Demons 10-0 in five innings, the Braves were on the short-end of a lopsided 15-5 loss to Williamstown as Demons starting pitcher Michael Walter struck out seven and scattered nine hits in six innings of baseball.

    Williamstown's 15 runs are the most Grant County has allowed thus far and the deficit was the largest for the Braves this season.

  • WHS Golfer wins tournament

    The high school golf season may be several months away, but that is not stopping Sarah Kellam from improving her game.

    Kellam, a seventh grader at Williamstown High School, recently won the nine-hole Aquafina Golf Series event at Perry Park, firing a round of 42 for nine holes, which was three strokes better than her closest competitor.

    "I was just happy to be back out, and I played the course. I'm surprised I won. It's a tough course considering how wet it was," Kellam said.

    Kellam said her ability to drive the ball well off the tee box helped in her victory.

  • Football playoff format changed

    For the 2008 football season, the football playoffs will turn back into history as the Kentucky High School Athletic Association announced that the playoff format would change this fall.

    The last two seasons, the four teams qualifying from within a district played each other in the first and second rounds based on district records.

    This season, schools participating in Class 1A-Class 5A will return to "out of district" cross bracketing beginning with the first round.

  • GCHS Braves bounce back with two...

    Following a 10-run loss to 32nd District and county opponent Williamstown last week, it would have been easy for the Grant County High School baseball team to feel sorry for itself.

    However, coach Van Duncan and the players refused to take the easy way out.

    Rather than let the loss to the Demons beat them more than once, the Braves bounced back from the loss with back-to-back victories, however, it was a daunting task.

    On April 26, Grant County pummeled Henry County, one of the better teams in the 8th Region, 14-4 on the road.

  • Grant County Board tackles...

    Whether or not an administrator can serve as an coach is a question the Grant County Board of Education wrestled with during a public work session on April 22.

    Because it was only a work session, the board could take no action. However, the board is expected to vote on the measure in the future.

    The question originated from a question that was posed to superintendent Michael Hibbett, asking what his philosophy was on the issue.
