  • Lady Braves defeat Williamstown...

    The Grant County softball team knew that in order to reach their goal of a district championship, they would have to take down a familiar foe.

    The Lady Braves faced county rival Williamstown in the first round of the district tournament and handed the Lady Demons a 10-0 loss in six innings on May 24.

  • Braves fall in district tourney

    After scoring early against Walton-Verona in the first round of the district tournament, the Grant County baseball team was confident they were on their way to compete for their third straight district championship.

    The Bearcats had different ideas.

    Walton-Verona rallied for a seven-run inning to defeat the Braves 7-5 on May 25.

    Grant County defeats Carroll County

    Scores: 13-0 in five innings

    When: May 14

    Where: Carroll County High School

    What: The Lady Braves dominated Carroll County from the beginning, scoring eight runs in the second inning.

    Quote of the game: “We’re trying to stay mentally alert,” coach Ott Reed said. “We want to get some momentum going into the district tournament. Wins and losses aren’t important right now; it’s about getting ready for the district tournament.”

  • Demons earn win on senior night

    After starting the season with six straight wins, the Williamstown baseball team has struggled, coming into their senior night game against Paris with eight straight losses.

    The Demons were able to earn a 5-0 win against Paris on May 14 to snap their losing streak.

  • WHS tennis team takes on WV, SK

    The Williamstown girls’ tennis team is still enjoying their first year in existence and have played matches against junior varsity squads from Walton-Verona and Simon Kenton.

    “They’ve shown a lot of progress,” coach Sean Binder said. “I’m impressed with how they’ve picked up the sport. They’re getting more comfortable with the game.”

    “We’re improving a lot this season,” Sarah Bialik, a junior said. “We’re having a lot of fun this year. It’s exciting in our first year.”

  • Hicks named new GCHS ball coach

    Jim Hicks is coming to Grant County with the plan to make the Braves boys’ basketball team a contender in the eighth region.

    Hicks was named the head basketball coach for the Grant County boys’ basketball team. Hicks follows Joe Utter, who was the interim head coach last season after replacing Ron Kinmon, who was the head coach for 11 years before resigning.

  • Braves fall to Bourbon County

    Grant County baseball coach Darrick Lee has told his players all season that they will not shy away from tough competition.

    He believes that to be considered a top program in the state, they’ll have to face top competition.

    The Braves faced Bourbon County (a team with 20 wins) on May 11, coming away with a 12-3 loss in part because of errors.

  • Asher signs to play for Pikeville

    Williamstown senior Josh Asher knew that if he wanted to make his goal of playing baseball at the college level a reality, he would have to put the work in to make it happen.

    Asher’s persistence got the attention of Rob Taylor and the Pikeville College baseball coaching staff, and he signed to play for Pikeville on May 11.

  • Walters runs in Flying Pig

    It was rainy and dark at 6 a.m. May 2 when Jeff Walters loaded a crowded bus traveling toward the hills of Eden Park in Cincinnati.

    Walters, of Dry Ridge, was preparing to participate in his seventh Flying Pig Marathon as part of the Performance Pipe four-man relay team. His bib number, 8582, matched that of teammates Phillip Foley, of Hebron, Ky., Norm Hageman, of Plano, Texas, and Barrett Jesseph, of Knoxville, Tenn.
