  • Legends baseball captures Battle...

    It would have been easy for the Legends baseball team, a 12-and-under team comprised of players from Grant County, to look past the competition at the Battle of the Borders Tournament as they are heading to the Baseball Hall of Fame and Cooperstown, N.Y., this weekend.

    Instead, the Legends were focused on the task at hand, winning the tournament. which was played last weekend at the Northern Kentucky Sports Park, that featured teams from Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan and Tennessee.

  • Williamstown searches for...

    With the beginning of volleyball season two months away, Williamstown High School Athletic Director Todd Dupin is feeling a sense of urgency.

    The reason?

    Dupin and Williamstown administrators are still searching for a volleyball coach following the resignation of Kelli Lee at the conclusion of last season. Lee has since been named the new coach at Grant County High School.

    "We have had one applicant," Dupin said.

    Dupin said he is waiting on a new principal to be hired before continuing with the interview process.

  • NRA Youth Sports Fest Camp...

    Area youth who enjoy the outdoors are invited to the 8th Annual NRA Youth Sports Fest Camp, which will be held from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on June 21 at Lloyd Wildlife Management Area in Crittenden.

    The camp features a full day of outdoor activities including fishing, archery, rifle, muzzleloader, trap shooting and a hunter safety trail challenge.

    Last year, a total of 105 children took part in the event.

    Deborah Price, who is helping with the production of the program, said a goal is to introduce children to the outdoors.

    Do you have plans for Aug. 29? What, you havent circled that date on your calendar, which happens to be the night the Grant County High School football team opens its season? What about Aug. 11 when the Williamstown High School volleyball team entertains Carroll County?

  • Perfection—GCMS Lady...

    Knowing the Grant County Middle School girls' soccer team was improved from last year, coach Phil Mattingly made a deal with his team—if they went undefeated, he would shave his head.

    His team lived up to its end of the deal, putting together a 7-0-1 season due, in part, to a combination of strong offensive play and a stingy defense that allowed a total of three goals.

  • GCHS gridiron gang shakes off...

    The calendar may read June, but for the Grant County High School football team, it means the season has officially started.

    For coach Mike Davis and his team, passing league workouts, which feature no pads and helmets, no running plays and no defensive pressure, have the Braves on the practice field with the hope of improving prior to their Aug. 29 season opener against Pendleton County.

    Grant County worked on its passing offense June 7 at a 7-on-7 tournament in Louisville, where Davis saw some flashes of greatness.

  • Former GCHS soccer star ready to...

    For Amy Vallandingham, making a name for herself in soccer has come naturally.

    As a high school student-athlete at Grant County High School, Vallandingham set 10 school records, including goals scored in a season, goals scored in a career, goals scored in a game and consecutive games with a goal or an assist. Those records came a result of playing her freshman and sophomore years at St. Henry District High School before ending her high school career as a member of the Lady Braves' program.

  • GCHS' McIntosh headed to...

    Sometimes you just know when something is right.

    After talking with Grant County High School girls basketball coach Darrell Guffey, Salena McIntosh knew she had found the perfect place.

    A visit to the University of the Cumberlands only confirmed what she already knewthe GCHS senior basketball player would sign with the Lady Patriots.

    "I loved the campus, and it seemed like a great fit," said McIntosh.

  • Full speed ahead for Kentucky...

    Despite the fact that Kentucky Speedway has been sold to Bruton Smith and Speedway Motorsports Inc., owner of seven NASCAR Sprint Cup tracks, Kentucky Speedway's lawsuit against NASCAR and International Speedway Corp. continues, according to Jerry Carroll.

    Kentucky Speedway Spokesman Tim Bray said the lawsuit is separate from the purchase of Kentucky Speedway.

    "Mr. Carroll has said that Kentucky Speedway LLC still exists and so does the lawsuit. Both will go on," Bray said.
