  • Lady Braves overcome adversity...

    The Grant County Lady Braves soccer team has had a lot of injuries lately that have caused major challenges for coach Melinda White.

    On Aug. 30, the Lady Braves were dealt a blow in the Walton-Verona game, losing senior Renee Neltner to a torn ligament injury.

    At that point in the game, the Lady Braves had a 2-1 lead in the game over the Lady Bearcats.

    According to White, the team had received an injury timeout to carry Neltner off the field.

  • Braves get first win 22-6 over...

    Grant County put their loss to Owen County quickly behind them, defeating Walton-Verona 22-6, Sept. 3 on an unusually cool summer evening.

    After throwing an interception, the Bearcats scored a first quarter touchdown, failing the extra point but managing to take a 6-0 lead.

    “The offense kind of put us in the hole early,” said coach Mike Davis. “Nathan Davis throws an early pick and Walton-Verona starts with a short field and it’s 6-0.”

  • Rich qualifies for All &...

    Williamstown senior golfer Ali Rich qualified for the All “A” State Tournament, Aug. 25, shooting an 84 in the regional tournament at Eagle Creek Country Club.

    “It is really nice qualifying for state,” she said. “It is not the big state tournament, but it will be good practice to get ready for state.”

    Rich joins Carroll County junior Quincy Hogan and the Owen County girl’s golf team at the All “A” State Tournament, Sept. 11 in Richmond.

  • GCHS cross country hosting GC...

    The Grant County High School cross country team is hosting the 37th annual Grant County Invitational, Sept. 11 at Sherman Elementary School.

    Last year, the Braves cross country team had a good showing as current senior Jordan Cummins finished in fourth place in the home meet with a time of 16:56.1.

    Overall the team had a strong showing as four of their top runners finish in the top 20.

    On the girls’ side, the Lady Braves will look to improve from last year after finishing 11th out of 12 schools in the meet.

  • Lady Braves blow out Bellevue 9-0

    Scores: 9-0 W, 2-2 T

    When: Aug. 28, 30

    Where: Bellevue High School, Walton-Verona High School

    What: The Lady Braves walloped the Lady Tigers 9-0, Aug. 28 in Bellevue, before tying with the Lady Bearcats, 2-2, Aug. 30 in Walton to improve record to 2-2-1.

    Upcoming: The Lady Braves will go on the road to play Ludlow Sept. 8.

  • Williamstown sweeps past Grant...

    It was a quick match up, but for the Lady Demons it was a win over their county rival, defeating the Braves in two sets, 25-14 and 25-11 Aug. 30 at Grant County High School.

    “Tonight was awesome,” said Williamstown coach Wes Staff. “The team showed up to play hard, very hard.”

    Williamstown improved its record to 5-6 on the season, including 3-2 in district play.

    Staff feels Williamstown really “attacked the net’ in the matches against Grant County.

  • Braves lose nail biter to Rebels...

    On a clear brisk evening, the Braves dropped their season opener to Owen County 14-13, Aug. 28, at the  4th annual Grant County Gridiron Kickoff Bowl at Grant County High School.

    “It was a good ballgame,” said Braves head coach Mike Davis, “I said all week long that Owen County has a great ballclub and a few mistakes cost us the ballgame. I take full responsibility in this loss.”

    The Braves got the scoring started early as they got a touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Nathan Davis, from five yards out to take an early 7-0 lead.

  • Moreland swings way to state...

    For Williamstown junior golfer Sean Moreland, going to the state tournament is a goal he set out for and completed with his second place finish at the All “A” Tournament Aug. 26 at Eagle Creek Country Club.

    “It feels good going to State,” he said. “I wish I could have played better and got first place in the meet.”

    Moreland finished second behind Jordan Tingle of Trimble County by just one stroke.

    “It was hole number 10,” Moreland said. “I double-bogeyed on a par three and that kept me from medaling.”

  • Rich qualifies for State
