  • Braves end Williamstown’s season

    The Williamstown Demons and Grant County Braves boys basketball teams met on Feb. 18 in the first round of the 2013 32nd District Tournament.

    The stakes were high when the cross-town rivals faced off, each with the goal of ending the other team’s season. Leading up to the game, the odds leaned in favor of Grant County whose season record of 23-4 qualified them for the top spot in the region.
    Williamstown’s season has been less fortunate. The young team with a new coach has struggled to keep up with more experienced teams.

  • Youth soccer sign up set for...

    The Grant County Youth Soccer will be offering an in-person signup at the Grant County Public Library from 5:30 to 7:30 on March 14.
    Signups can also be completed at www.gcys-soccer.com as soon as possible.

    The GCYS is partnering with The Challenger Sports Academy to offer a seven-week training program taught by professional British trainers. The program begins April 8 and continues through May 24. It is a structured training program with the main focus being on individual skill development and structured scrimmages.

  • Braves youth earn 23 trophies,...

    The Grant County Youth Wrestling team earned 23 trophies at Campbell County High School on Feb. 10. Medals were given to the top four finishers.

    Winners from Grant County include:
    • 1st place - Drew Dickerson, Alex Mattingly and Carter Messerly
    • 2nd place - Ethan Barnes, Austin Lillie, Grady Reynolds and Brandon Thurman
    • 3rd place - Noah Chaney, Brandon Gibson, Luke Hyden, Nate Mains, Olivia Messerly and Noah Toomey
    • 4th place - Bryant Henson, Elijah Reynolds and Bradley Wooten

    The Williamstown track and field team closed out its 2013 season on May 10 at the Class 1A Region 4 Championships hosted by Walton-Verona High School at the Walton Verona Athletic Complex located in Verona.  The top two in each event and the next 10 best performances among the seven Class 1A regions compiled results qualify for the KHSAA State Track and Field Championships that will be held at the University of Louisville on May 17-18.

  • Girls on the Run joyful, unique...

    Girls on the Run is a program for girls in the third through fifth grade and the sixth through eighth grade to participate in an after-school program. This program is designed to allow every girl to recognize her inner strength.

    The lessons encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Each school discusses body image, self-esteem, bullying, gossiping and peer pressure among other topics. Physical activity is woven into the program to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a healthy life.

  • Lady Braves fall to Lady Cougars

    The Lady Braves were defeated by the Connor Cougars on May 1. Kayla Cummins took the mound for the Lady Braves. With strong defense, the Lady Braves were able to hold the Lady Cougars in check until the sixth inning when their bats began swinging. The Lady Braves will play Bracken County on May 14.
