  • Demons go cold, fall 7-1

    Williamstown opened their 32nd District schedule in an April 4 tilt against Walton-Verona.

    The Bearcats were playing their third game in five days against 32nd District foes, going 1-1 against Grant County over the stretch, including a loss less than 24 hours prior to stepping off the bus in Williamstown.

    It would have been easy to make a phone call, send a text or make a post on social media to announce her verbal commitment to the Kentucky basketball program.
    Junior Emma King of Lincoln County didn’t want to do that. She thought it would be more “special” for everyone if she went to Lexington to tell Coach Matthew Mitchell face to face.
     “That way I also got to visit them all (UK coaches and players). I love them all. It was a good excuse to go up there,” said King. “Plus, I wanted to see his reaction.

  • VAUGHT’S VIEWS

    It was almost 25 years ago that Kevin Young became the first person to run the 400-meter hurdles in less than 47 seconds. His time of 46.78 seconds set a world record — and 25 years later it still stands.
    Young, who won the gold medal in the 1992 Olympics while breaking the record set by Edwin Moses, was at the Maximum Velocity Track & Field Camp at Centre College in Danville recently sharing his expertise with youngsters from Kentucky and other states.

  • Grant County knocks off Lady...

    Old rivals met May 23 with an appearance in the 32nd District Championship and a punched ticket to the 8th Region Tournament at stake.

    Just ten days removed from a 10-0 defeat at the hands of the Lady Demons, it was the Lady Braves who prevailed victorious, beating the Lady Demons in a tightly contested game by a final score of 7-5.

  • Oldham County ends Lady Braves...

    For their efforts in advancing to the 32nd District Championship game, Grant County was rewarded with a showdown with 29th District Champion, Oldham County, who boasted a 32-5 record and a consensus top 15 ranking in the state entering the game.

  • WMS finishes NCKC season...

    The Williamstown Junior High soccer team completed an undefeated spring season against North Central Kentucky Conference competition with a 3-1 victory over Henry County, marking their ninth victory in as many games.

    The Demons outscored opponents 40-7, led by Tyler Osborne who netted a goal in each game, including the only goal against Gray Middle School in the team’s first game of the season, one which coach Bill Simpkins considers a highlight of the season.

  • Seasons end for Braves, Demons...

    The 2017 baseball seasons ended for both Grant County and Williamstown in similar fashion, the Demons falling in five innings to Simon Kenton by a score of 12-2 to open 32nd District Tournament play on May 23 and the Braves allowing a run in the first inning of their May 25 tilt with Walton-Verona, before rain resulted in a 24-hour postponement.

  • VAUGHT’S VIEWS

    Jarred Vanderbilt will be reporting to Kentucky June 6 as scheduled and apparently is fine after injuring his lower right leg/ankle late in the Jordan Brand Classic in April.
    “Everything is going well,” said Robert Vanderbilt, Jarred’s father. “He’s feeling good, looking good. He just can’t wait until he gets his opportunity at Kentucky.”
    Robert Vanderbilt said his son was told to stay off the leg after the injury and has been doing exactly that.

  • Lady Demons lose in seventh...

    The Williamstown Lady Demons softball team entered the May 18 contest against the Shelby County Lady Rockets with a school best 16-9 record.  It was a battle of dueling pitchers until the top of the 7th inning when Shelby County scored 4 times to break a 1-1 game wide open and beat the Lady Demons 5-1.

  • Local athletes shine at state...

    Several local high school athletes competed May 20 in the state track and field meet at the University of Kentucky.
    The Williamstown High School 4x800 relay team place eighth in the state with a time of 8.41.29. It was a new school record for the team, which consists of Micah McCain, Caden Tien, Bradley Perkins and Jackson Reaves.
    In the 4x400 relay, a team of Perkins, McCain, Ben Kinsey and Jeff Kinman finished with a time of 3.58.40 to place 24th in the state. Perkins also placed 17th in the state in the 800.
