  • Five qualify for Louisville

    Hard work and dedication paid off for five local athletes, as they will head to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Track and Field meet, May 17-19 at the University of Louisville.

    Grant County High School junior Taylor Cummins was the lone representative for her school, qualifying in the discus throw event with a distance of 85 feet, 3 inches.

    It was the first time qualifying in the discus throw event, an event she just started performing in about three weeks ago.

  • GC, Lady Demons compete at...

    The Grant County and Williamstown High School tennis programs felt the heat, as they competed in the 8th Region Tennis Tournament May 7 in Frankfort.

    It was a change of weather for the programs from a season ago, about 45 degrees difference, with a blazing sun above them.

    For the Lady Braves, it was also a change of momentum for Courtney Ford and Sydney Tencza, as they were paired as doubles instead of being in the singles tournament.

  • Stith signs letter with TMC

    Grant County High School senior Erica Stith signed her national letter of intent to play softball for Thomas More College, May 11 in the GCHS library.

    “It was so exciting,” Stith said. “I was looking forward to 2:30 p.m. to sign the paper. I was thinking of it all week.”

    Stith, who has played softball for GCHS since 2008, will be trading in her blue and gold for just blue with TMC.

    “They have really good academics and I like the coaches and the team a lot,” Stith said.

  • Chapman signs letter with Union...

    Brian Chapman will be continuing his soccer career, as he signed his national letter of intent with Union College, May 7 at Grant County High School.

    The senior, who played for the GCHS soccer program for four years and at the middle school for three years, will now be a part of a Union team that managed to go 10-7-2 in 2011.

    “Coach Tyler Brock has helped me all the way through this decision and I am anxious to get started,” Chapman said.

  • Wright named GLVC Freshman of...

    Northern Kentucky University’s Zach Wright was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Freshman of the Year to headline the final selections to the All-GLVC men’s golf team.

    Wright joined Jones Brown and Steve Rickels as All-GLVC selections by coaches’ vote.  Michael Schmidt and Corey Richmond had already earned All-GLVC recognition by virtue of their finishes at the GLVC Championships.

    Additionally, Daryl Landrum was chosen as the GLVC Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career.

  • Hunter education classes offered...

    The Northern Kentucky Hunter Education Association is offering a Hunter Education Course in the following Counties: Boone, Campbell, Kenton and Grant.

    All courses are free of charge and open to anyone 9 years of age and older. If you are planning to hunt in Kentucky or out of State a Hunter Education Course completion card (Orange Card) may be neeeded. Anyone born after Jan. 1, 1975 must carry a card while hunting in the state of Kentucky along with their Kentucky hunting license.

  • Hicks to host youth basketball...

    The third annual Future Stars camp, hosted by Grant County High School basketball coach Jim Hicks, will be held June 4-6 at GCHS.

    The first session is for grades kindergarten through fifth grade and the second session is for grades six through eight. The first session will run from 9 a.m. to noon and the second session will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

    Cost is $45 per person and will include a T-shirt. For more information, contact coach Hicks at 606-465-0624.
