  • GCYF hosts WHODEY at spring camp workout

    When: June 1
    What: Grant County Youth Football ended their spring football camp.
    The cheerleaders and football players were treated to a special guest when the Cincinnati Bengals mascot, “WHODEY” appeared at the camp.
    WHODEY played football with the children and even had autographs and pictures taken.
    With camp over, fall signups on the way with the first day of registration being from 6 to 8 p.m. June 13.

  • Annual NRA Youth Sportsfest set for June 18

    When: June 18
    Where: Lloyd’s Wildlife Management Area, Crittenden
    What: The Fifth District League of Kentucky Sportsmen will hold the annual NRA Youth Sportsfest Day Camp at 8 a.m. June 18 at Lloyd’s Wildlife Management Area on Rt. 491 in Crittenden.
    This is the district’s 11th year to host the event. Last year 149 children, between the ages of 9 to 18, attended,
    The annual Youth Sportsfest Day Camp introduces young people to shooting sports and outdoors.

  • GCYS extends registration deadline

    When: June 11
    Where: www.gcys-soccer.com
    What: The deadline to register for Grant County Youth Soccer has been extended to 9 a.m. to noon on June 11 at the Grant County Public Library. Children ages 3 to 13 on or before Aug. 1, 2011 are eligible. U4, U6, and U8 divisions will cost $45 per child. U10, U12, and U14 divisions will cost $65 per child.   • St. Elizabeth offers sports physicals

    Dr. Troy Ashcraft and Dr. Sandra Utter, St. Elizabeth physicians, are offering sports physical appointments for Grant County students at the Dry Ridge office.

    Dr. Utter will give physicals on July 11 and Dr. Ashcraft will see students on July 13. Appointments are necessary and will be given from 9 a.m. to noon. The price of the physical is $15, which must be paid at the time of service.

  • GCYS fall registration deadline is June 10

    What: The deadline to register for Grant County Youth Soccer is June 10. The season will run from August through October. Ages are 3-13 and have to be at that age on Aug. 1. The prices for the age groups U4, U6, U8 are $45 per child and U10, U12 and U14 are $65 per child.
    **U12/U14 divisions will be divided – U14 will play 4 home games and 4 games in the Northern Kentucky Area.

    After defeating Williamstown for the first game of the district tournament, the Braves were defeated by Owen County 7-6.
    The game was very close throughout each inning.
    Ryan Wooten had two home runs and six RBIs.
    The Braves advanced to the first round of the regional tournament to take on South Oldham May 22.

  • GCMS track sends seven to state meet in Lexington

    Seven members of the Grant County Middle School track team competed last in the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association (KTCCCA) middle school state championships at Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School in Lexington on May 14.

    Halee Hudson, an eighth grader, brought home two medals - one representing a second place finish in the turbo-javelin event, and a second medal representing a third place finish in shot put.  

    In her third event, discus, she posted a 10th place finish.

  • Coach Arvin meets with youth players

    On May 9, the Grant County Youth Football Spring Camp had a surprise, Coach David Arvin (head coach of the high school)   came down to watch, teach and speak to thefootball players.  

    Spring camps runs for six weeks. In these six weeks the players learn the fundamentals of football.   

    Fall signups are June 1 from 5:30 to 7 p.m., June 13 6 to 8p.m., June 25 1 to 3p.m. and July 16 1 to 3p.m.

    The signups will be behind Dry Ridge Elementary.

    The Tom Duncan and Arby’s-Shoney’s team defeated the Bombers 3-2 in eight innings.
    Tyler Jones led the offense with three hits in four at bats.
    Starting pitcher Stanley Riley went 4 2/3  innings with one hit, two runs, one earned, nine walks and five strikeouts.
    Brian Meade came in relief to get the win, going 3 1/3 innings with four hits, one walk and four strikeouts.
