  • GCHS Braves fall to Owen Rebels

    At the coin toss, the Owen County Rebels won the call and decided to kick off to the Braves on Aug. 25 at Grant County.
    Early in the first quarter, Shelby Caudill intercepted a pass intended for a Rebels wide receiver.


    With great scoring position and a hand off to Derek Sutherland, the Braves scored the first touch down.
    Because of smart plays and strong defense, the Braves were able to keep the Rebels scoreless in the first quarter.

  • Deer archery season begins Sept. 1

    When Kentucky’s 2012-2013 deer season opens with the beginning of archery hunting Sat., Sept. 1, there will be plenty of reasons for hunters to be optimistic.
    Last deer season was arguably the state’s best ever. A record 68 bucks taken in Kentucky qualified for entry into the Boone & Crockett record books, a record for the state.
    Kentucky hunters also posted the fourth best overall harvest with119,656 deer, the highest total since the 2008-09 season. In 96 of Kentucky’s 120 counties, hunters bagged more deer than in the 2010-2011 deer season.

  • GCHS girls golf team finishes 4th Aug. 25

    The Grant County High School girl’s golf team earned a fourth place finish on Aug. 25 at the Bluegrass Invitational at Glenmary Country Club.


    Sarah Kellam, the team s senior and leader, shot a 79.
     “I’ve had a successful year thus far. However, I am working hard not to get complacent. There is always room for improvement in every aspect of the game,”  Kellam said.

  • GCHS Braves beat Owen Rebels 3-1

    The Grant County High School Braves soccer team kicked their way to victory by defeating the Owen County Rebels 3-1 on Aug. 16.
    Jordan Kearns, as goalie, was tough on defense as he communicated well with his defenders and played aggressively off the line.
    “The Owen County game was a great team effort and shows how far this team has come since last year,” said Coach Dave Schmitt.
    Schmitt was pleased with the performance of the defense.

  • Braves football kicks off season with new coach

     Kevin Siple is the new head coach of the Grant County High School Braves football team.


    With 27 years of experience, Siple is not new to being a coach.
    Because Grant County has had three coaches in the last three years, Siple wants to bring stability to the program and is looking to finish his career with the Braves.

  • GCHS girls beat W-V

    The Grant County High School Lady Braves soccer team traveled to Walton-Verona to beat the Lady Bearcats 3 – 2 on Aug. 15.


    Coach Garrett Griffith said Gwen MacAdams had a breakout game, followed by Kaylie Ezell and Kelsey Lund, two freshmen players, who stepped up in place of some injured players.
    “I was happy with their play because a win is always a positive,” Griffith said.


    Griffith said his team is strong on possession.

  • Kickin’

    The Grant County Varsity Girls Soccer team played their best yet this season as they faced Cooper, a team they have struggled with in the past losing to them 5-0 and 6-1.  


    When the two teams met on Aug. 13, they came away with a 2-2 tie. “The girls didn’t make mistakes and played exceptionally well together,” said GCHS girls varsity coach Garrett Griffith.

    The strengths of the team are the ability to possess the ball and play great defense.

    Morgan Taylor Hughes McClure has been named the Grant County News Athlete of the Week for July 26. McClure is the daughter of Thomas and Angela McClure.

    Accomplishments: All Region Team.

    History in your sport: Since third grade and varsity since seventh grade.
