  • A bond on, off the court

    Eurides said, “To a father growing old, there is nothing dearer than a daughter.”

    For Mark and Tori Wilhoit the bond of father and daughter will go beyond the years of being a coach and player.

    “The beginning was difficult,” he said. “I was pretty hard on her in the beginning, but I wouldn’t trade those years for anything.”

    Tori first got interested in basketball when her dad introduced her to the sport when she was in the fourth grade.

  • Autism doesn’t keep Eggemeier out of sports

    Not many people with autism have the ability to participate in sports, but a Grant County High School sophomore served as a team manager.

    “I love basketball,” Andrew Eggemeier said. “I played basketball in the second and third grade and my team won the county championship.”

  • March Mayhem!

    With the NCAA Tournament starting up this week, students and teachers at Grant County Middle School got their mayhem on with a student-faculty basketball game March 11.

    The game was played between eighth graders and faculty members at GCMS, with the faculty winning the game.

    Proceeds from the concessions at the game went to the GCMS Relay for Life team. Veronica Camacho, co-captain of the relay team, estimated that they raised around $1,000.

  • Baseball clinic coming March 12, 13

    When: March 12, 13
    Where: GCHS baseball field (in gym,  if required due to weather.)
    What: The Grant County Youth Baseball Clinic will be held at GCHS and allows those ages 6-15 to learn the fundamentals of baseball. Any questions, call Tracy Goe at 859-322-6739 or coach Darrick Lee at 502-319-4645. Registration forms are available at all Grant County elementary schools and Grant County middle schools.

    The Grant County cheerleaders won the 32nd District competition in the traditional cheer category. Grant County cheerleaders are Christy Jones, Leslie True, Carrie West, Karianna Curd, Rebecca Soper, Janessa Mullins, Shantel Noel, Betsy Kinman, Mandy Covey, Bethany Bennet, Dione Smith, Tameca Vannarsdall and Amy Jones. They are sponsored by Dorothy Ryan.

  • Cummins gets his wish to run in the South

    Jordan Cummins got his dream to come true, signing a national letter of intent with Jacksonville State University (Ala.) March 1.

    “I like running in warmer climates,” he said. “Jacksonville State is on the Gulf Coast and travel in warmer areas so I felt it was a great fit for me.”

    JSU is a Division I school and for Cummins that was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.

    “I fit into the program really well,” he said. “On the plus side, my aunt only lives an hour from campus.”

  • Highlights of the 2010-2011 Basketball Season

    Amongst the many trials and tribulations that a basketball program goes through, the four programs in Grant County saw some highlights for the season that will be remembered.

    There were career milestones for multiple players, including Williamstown senior Tori Wilhoit, who scored her 1,500th career point on Jan. 11 and nabbed 1,500 rebounds in her outstanding career.

    Braves lonely senior Josh Blackburn scored 31 points against Owen County Feb. 5, a career high, but still was not happy with the outcome of the game, as they lost 73-67.

  • NATIONAL CHAMPS!

    Despite being a first-year team, the Williamstown High School dance team brought home first place honors.

    They won the national championship for hip-hop division and placed second in the pom-pom division at the Cheer Elite’s Bluegrass National Championships March 5 in Lexington.

    Coach Angie Williams said she couldn’t believe it when they announced Williamstown to come up on stage.

  • WHS dance team to peform in Lexington

    When: March 5
    Where: Heritage Hall Convention Center, Lexington    
    What: The Williamstown dance team’s pom-pom and hip-hop categories will perform at the national event in Lexington. The meet will be taped and sent to local cable access channels in the summer and will be broadcasted throughout the rest of the year.
