  • Braves defeat rival Demons 6-2

    The game was even until a long fly ball into deep left field by Braves sophomore Jordan Martin, hit the band tower for a two-run homer, and swung the advantage in favor of Grant County, as they defeated Williamstown 6-2 on May 5.

    “It felt good for it to be my first home run and get the win over Williamstown,” he said.

    For the Braves it was their first game in nearly a month and Grant County coach Darrick Lee said he felt the team played like they hadn’t played in a month.

    The Grant County High School Braves defeated the Owen County Rebels 3-1, at Grant County High School’s newly refurbished field. Junior pitcher Jimmy Goforth struck out six batters, to lead the Braves.

    The Grant County High School girls’ track team had their most successful day of the season at Ludlow. Kelli Phillippi led the way by winning the 1,600 meter and 800m races. Angie Adkins won the long jump.

    Where: Bullitt Central High School
    What: The Lady Braves won three out of the five games in the tournament, improving their record to 14-8 on the season.
    Upcoming: The Lady Braves will head to Lloyd Memorial High School for the Egelston-Maynard Sports Classic May 6 and 7.

  • Kennedy named new girls’ basketball coach

    A new era in Williamstown Lady Demons’ basketball has begun, as Kasey Kennedy was named as Mark Wilhoit’s replacement in April.

    “I’m only 25-years-old and for them to think of me this way, I feel like they knew that I was ready for the position and I am ready for the tasks at hand,” she said.

    Kennedy graduated from Walton-Verona High School in 2004 and went on to play collegiate basketball at Midway College, before having to sit out her entire senior season. Kennedy teaches English at Williamstown Middle School.

  • Cahill signs letter of intent to play football

    Football wasn’t in the picture for Grant County High School senior Preston Cahill until an August day three years ago, when former head coach Mike Davis appeared at a soccer practice.

    Fast forward three years later, when Cahill signed a national letter of intent April 27 at GCHS, to play collegiate football at Centre College.

    “I’m glad I made this decision,” he said. “It is probably the best decision I could have made for my future for school and sports and I hope to make a contribution on the field.”

  • Play Ball!

    On a bright sunny April morning, Grant County Little League Baseball and T-ball, held their opening day games at Grant County Park in Crittenden.

    The children lined up against the fences, as their teammates stepped up to the plate, kicking dirt up in the batter’s box.

    The umpires, chanted the two words that gear people up for baseball, “Play Ball.”
    Regardless of who won, all of the children got to play and the parents and attendees experienced a day full of games on three fields in the park.

  • Lady Demons rebound against Deming

    In basketball, there are defensive and offensive rebounds.

    For the Williamstown Lady Demons softball team, they needed an “offensive rebound,” after losing 10-0 against Grant County April 20 and they got it, defeating the Deming Lady Devils April 21.

    “It was a game they needed,” Coach T.J. West said. “Especially after the way the girls lost the Grant County game.”

  • Williamstown pitcher hit-by-pitch

    In the second game of the regular season April 20, fans and players witnessed junior pitcher Emma Harris get beaned in the side of the helmet in the bottom of the first inning.

    “I couldn’t hear at first,” she said. “I have gotten hit before, so it wasn’t new to me, I just couldn’t hear and that is what scared me. I wasn’t going to come out of the game.”

    The ball field grew quiet as Harris’ dad, David hopped the fence to check on his daughter.

  • GCHS hosts All-Comers meet April 19

    The Grant County High School track team hosted the Grant County All-Comers, April 19.

    Eight schools were in attendance, including Williamstown.

    The Grant County boys’ track team lost to Holmes by 20 points in the standings.

    Some highlights for the Braves boys’ team, was sophomore Nathan Davis winning the 400 meter dash with a time of 55.58 seconds. Davis also won the high jump, reaching 6 feet even.

    The boys 4x400m relay won by one second over Walton-Verona.
