  • A reflection on the year in GC sports

    When I came to Grant County in July, 2010, I began a journey through three seasons of sports teams for Williamstown and Grant County high schools.

    As I prepared for the fall sports preview section and getting the head shots of all of the players, I realized I had begun my career as a sports writer for the community.

    It wasn’t long before I was at the first sporting events of the new school year, a fresh start for all of the programs from the previous year. As golf teed off and soccer started off on the field, the coverage began.

  • Tennis teams serve up at regionals

    First-year programs work to get credibility and to sustain success for the future.

    For the Williamstown and Grant County tennis programs, the experience of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Regional Tennis meet May 16 in Frankfort, proved there is going to be baby steps before success at the regional level.

  • Lady Braves fall short of ‘state’

    For five innings the game looked like it was going to be in the hands of the Lady Braves. That was until in the top of the sixth when Collins tied the game at 4-4 on a three-run home run and then took a 6-4 lead that would be the final score, ending the high school careers of seniors Taryn Biddle and Katelyn Roy for Grant County High School.

    “It happened so fast,” coach Ott Reed said. “It wasn’t a bad pitch by Roy. I just think I called the wrong pitch.”

  • Cox signs with Lindsey Wilson College

    It has been Nick Cox’s dream since he was a little boy to play football, and now he is getting his chance to play at the collegiate level, signing with Lindsey Wilson College May 24 in the Grant County High School Library.

    “I have wanted to play football my entire life and in college, so I am excited,” he said.

    Cox played all four years of high school for the Braves football program and also participated for the wrestling team this past season.

  • Braves baseball season comes to an end

    The season came to a close for the Grant County baseball team, as they fell to Henry County 6-5, in the first round of the Kentucky High School Association 8th Region tournament at Simon Kenton High School in Independence.

    After having a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Braves were nearing an appearance in the semi-finals of the tournament, but a series of errors in the inning led to two runs for Henry County and the eventual win.

  • Lady Braves has “state” of mind

    After falling short in the 32nd District Championship game to Walton-Verona May 29 1-0, the Lady Braves advanced to the regional semi-finals, beating Gallatin County 5-2, May 30 at Simon Kenton High School, in Independence.

    The loss in the district tournament was a disappointing loss for the team and coach Ott Reed, but it also was a loss they could afford, since the top two teams from the district tournament advance to the regional tournament.

  • WHS, GCHS track represented at state

     

    It was the culmination of three months of running, jumping and relaying, but the Williamstown and Grant County track teams competed in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Championship meets in Louisville May 27-28.

    Williamstown

    Blake Edmondson, a junior at WHS, competed in four events for the track team and placed seventh in the long jump, scoring two points for the schools program, which is in its second year of existence.

    The Tom Duncan and Arby’s-Shoney’s little league baseball team beat Ft. Mitchell Garage 9-6 in come-from-behind fashion.

    With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, and Grant behind 4-2, scored seven runs for the win.

    June 12, 1986
    Two Grant County High School runners finished in the top three spots of the state track and field meet recently: junior Kelli Phillippi and senior Marlon Kinsey.

  • Demons get first wins of the season

    When: May 20, 21
    Where: Paris High School and Bracken County High School
    What: Issac Alger lead the way for the Demons against Paris as he threw seven innings of shutout baseball, only throwing 63 pitches. Against Bracken County, the Demons were led by Zach Rose as he clubbed two home runs and drove in four runs.
