  • Schmitt to lead Braves soccer in rebuilding year

    For 42 years, Dave Schmitt has been involved in soccer and after four years as the junior varsity coach, he will be the varsity coach for the 2011 soccer season, taking over for Clay Mattingly who stepped down to spend more time with his family.

    “Soccer has been a part of me ever since I could walk,” he said. “My parents are from Germany and I have known it since I was a baby. I am looking forward to coaching my son, Forrest. My dad was my first coach and now it is me coaching mine and it is a cool feeling.”

  • Braves alumni games scheduled for Aug. 12

    When: Aug. 12
    Where: GCMS soccer field
    What: The Grant County High School soccer teams will be squaring off against the alumni. The boys game starts at 6 p.m. with the girls game following at 8 p.m.

  • Boone to lead Lady Braves soccer

    A new chapter in Lady Braves soccer has begun as first-year head coach Sarah Boone takes over a program that appeared in the regional tournament last season.

    Boone replaces Melinda White, who resigned at the end of the soccer season.

    For Boone, the opportunity to coach soccer was a big key for her after graduating from Northern Kentucky University in May, with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science.

  • GCHS press box with no cramps

    No more cramped spaces.

    No more inaudible talking.

    Grant County High School will have a new press box for the upcoming football season as construction is finished.

    The new press box, which dwarfs the original box, will give the sense of convenience for not only the football coordinators and media, but also for the patrons that will come watch not only football, but track as well.

    Construction on the press box began in October 2010 and the final touches, like bathroom signs are being placed. The whole project cost $632,000.

  • A PHOTO FINISH

    Members of the Grant County High School cross country team gathered at the middle school on the morning of July 22 to participate in a game designed by coach Marlon Kinsey.

    The object of the game was to run to nine different landmarks in and about the middle school, taking pictures on their cellphones to put into a photo contest near the end of practice.

    Categories included: Best overall, dullest, prettiest/ugliest, most original.

    Judges included Kinsey, Grant County News sports writer Matt Birkholtz, asisstant coaches and parents.

  • West named WHS athletic director

    After 29 years in coaching, T.J. West is taking a new adventure, as he was named the Williamstown High School athletic director for the upcoming 2011-2012 academic year.

    Being an athletic director has been on his mind in the past for West, but the timing wasn’t the easiest for him.

    “I hadn’t retired yet and didn’t have the time for it, but now I am and I’ve been wanting something more to do and have the time for it now,” West said.

  • Braves cross country races under the lights

    With a full moon hanging over the Grant County High School football field, the GCHS cross country team counted down the seconds leading to midnight as they prepared for their first practice of the season July 15.

    “I think it’s really cool to have practice at midnight,” eighth grade runner and 2010 state qualifier Hayley Leach said. “It’s a great way to open up the cross country season and it has a lot of people looking forward to it.”

  • Saylor wins 8th region KHSAA sportsmanship award

    It was surprising news for Rebecca Saylor, when she received word from Grant County High School athletic director Scott Shipp, that she had won the 8th Region KHSAA Sportsmanship Award.

    “I said are you kidding me,” she said to Shipp. “I was super excited.”
