When the dog days of August come rolling around, many sports fans turn to football and the upcoming fall sports. This year may be a little different with the season the Cincinnati Reds are having.

I am a die-hard baseball fan and for the past 15 years of my life, which is a majority of my life, the Reds have had 13 losing seasons. Many people in the area start looking at football once July arrives, partially because Bengals training camp is upon us and the Reds are 10 games out of first and no chance of overcoming that deficit.

This is no ordinary summer.

I’m really tired of hearing how the animal shelter is overcrowded with unwanted animals and how they’re going to enforce dog licenses this year for revenue and to help find lost animals (Channel 9 and Kentucky Post Web site).

I have always got my dogs licensed so they can be found and because it’s the law. I wonder how many elected officials have bought their dog licenses? I’m not just talking this year, but in year’s past? Enforcement should begin at the top.

Why have an ordinance if it is never followed? No one at the courthouse can explain this to me. In our animal ordinance, the definition of “animal” is all vertebrate creatures. Our animal control officer is supposed to take care of all domestic animals. That would include dogs, cats and livestock. But it seems our county officials keep interpreting “animals” as dogs.

What’s in a name?

Well, a lot when it comes to picking out the name of your child.

They will have that name for the rest of their lives and you’re responsible for it.

That’s a lot of pressure, plus you want something somewhat unique without it sounding bizarre.

No offense, but Bob, Ted, Tom and Frank are too common.

When my wife and I had our first child, picking out names seemed a lot easier.

She was determined that if we had a little girl we would name her Isabella and call her Bella for short.

I feel violated! There I said it. No, I haven’t been the victim of a violent or even minor crime, but I feel violated anyway.

An unwanted, unwelcome “guest” has invaded my personal space and he’s worn out his welcome.

There’s a mouse, not in my house, but in the News office.

I recently went on vacation and didn’t notice anything amiss before I left. But, upon my return when I opened my closet to put away my camera and purse, I noticed the “gifts” Mr. Mouse had left me.

Where has July gone? I’m pretty sure I just turned my calendar to July and it’s already July 22 and the Grant County Fair gets underway this weekend.

Geesh, where did the summer go?

You can count on two things when it’s fair time – heat and rain!

Last year, the move of the Grant County Fair from Crittenden to its new home at the Northern Kentucky Fairgrounds on Baton Rouge Road in Williamstown was overcast, pardon the pun, by the deluge of rain we received.

I have played soccer since I was 5 years old.

For me, it is my American pastime.

As the 2010 World Cup winds down, there are some things that have been boiling over for many years that I have to get off of my chest.

First of all, for those who are in the dark, the World Cup is the tournament of all tournaments pitting 36 of the best international teams in the world against each other.

This year’s tournament is being played in South Africa, but for many sports talk show hosts, it would not matter if it was played right here in the Unites States.

Today’s topic is the Tea Party, a so – called political ‘phenomenon.’  Actually, the facts behind the hype show that the Tea Party is not so phenomenal and that as time has passed, and despite claims, it has proven inconsequential and is fading.
