CANCER NEVER SLEEPS

They came, they walked, they gave, they laughed and they cried. Thirty-six teams, despite rain and wind gusts, raised more than $80,000 on May 31 at the Grant County Relay For Life in the community’s fight against cancer.

Despite the rain and wet conditions, teams and survivors gathered for a meal prepared by Performance Pipe employees. Activities such as a live auction, a visit from Elvis, a pizza eating contest and a team tug-of-war were held.

Disaster volunteers honored

 

 The American Red Cross held their Volunteer Recognition dinner recently in Cincinnati. Greg Nix received the “You Make a Difference Award” for the time and commitment he’s shown since he’s joined the Grant County Team in a year and a half. Nancy Owens received a five-year of service pin and Diana Morgan received a 20-year service pin and plaque. Morgan serves as the Grant County unit coordinator.  

Duck Stamp Art Winners

 

2013 Federal Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest winners - Lucas Art of Williamstown entered three Grant County students in the 2013 Federal Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest. There were a total of 1,152 entries across the state of Kentucky. Anna Luu and Savannah Fowler each placed first in their age group and Daniel Goderwis placed second in his age group. Mary Lucas is their art instructor. 

ORRY MADDEN RECEIVES WEST POINT APPOINTMENT

Orry Madden, son of Bill and Sheila Madden of Dry Ridge, has received an appointment to the Class of 2017 at the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

Madden graduated from Calvary Christian School on May 31 where he was valedictorian, student body chaplain and president of the National Honor Society. The prospective members of the Class of 2017 will report to West Point for the first time on July 1, 2013.

What schools did you teach in: I taught at Park Hills School in Kenton County for 11 years, then at Mason Corinth in Grant County for 24 years.

What was your job title: I have been a teacher of third, fourth and fifth grades.

Educational background: Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Master of Arts in Elementary Ed. both at Eastern Kentucky Univ.

Miles Marquette graduates from P.L. Dunbar High

Miles Breckinridge Marquette graduated from P. L. Dunbar High School, Lexington, Kentucky, on May 24.

His future plans are to attend the Honors College at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, with a pre-medical major in marine biology.
