  • Wishing for the old days

I sure do miss the old days.

I loved being able to conveniently go into a video store and marvel at shelf after shelf of titles to choose from.

In the mood for a scare, the horror section provided all the chills you needed.

If laughter was what you needed, rows of comedy flicks would fill your giggling desires.

There was just something about the ability to pick up a box cover, read the synopsis and glance at pics from the movie that made the experience greater.

  • PERSONALLY SPEAKING

(Editor’s Note: This column was first published April 23, 2009. It is being re-printed in memory of Jane Scroggins, who died June 9, 2012. Her obituary can be found on page 7 of this issue.)
“I plain wanted to be a country doctor and I never regretted the choice,” Doc Scroggins said. But, the truth is, though he was a country doctor, his influence stretched throughout the United States and flowed into Europe, Asia and anywhere else that there was wildlife and farmland.

  • DOWN AND DIRTY

After the heat-wave in late May the blueberries ripened like wildfire, the Colorado potato beetle larva peppered the Pontiac potato patch and the cabbage worms nearly devoured my kale. I pick and squish and drown but so much was happening at once I needed a little assistance. As you know I do not use chemical pesticides in the vegetable garden. I will reach for a bio-insecticide if I must, however. Bio-insecticides include plant oils and compounds, naturally occurring bacteria, viruses and protozoa. We are essentially using nature to eat nature.

  • Hats off to Rep. Royce Adams

  • PERSONALLY SPEAKING

One of those multiple addressed emails came to me recently that stated how bad Obama was for giving bridge jobs to the Chinese and how it was yet another of his attempts at messing up American lives like his Iraq and Afghan wars.

  • A WORD FROM OUR READERS . . .

  • A WORD FROM OUR READERS . . .

I am the Disaster Action Team Leader for the American Red Cross here in Grant County. During my tenure with the Red Cross, I had my first experience at opening a shelter in Grant County for the clients who were affected by the tornado that struck Northern Grant County on March 2, 2012. I want to commend the volunteers and businesses that responded so quickly to the needs of the people of Grant County.

  • A WORD FROM OUR READERS . . .

On April 5, the Dry Ridge Fire Fighters and Dry Ridge Elementary Reading program held the 2nd Annual Build A Bear drive for Shriners Hospital in Lexington and Cincinnati, Ohio. Over 70 elementary students and parents enjoyed hot dogs and ice cream while building 100 bears to be distributed to the hospitals.
