  • Joyce Doyle loves kids

You can’t be around her for long without realizing that she loves other people’s children and has a sincere desire for them all to succeed.
She has spent two careers working with and around the children of Grant County.

  • It takes all of us to cover Grant County

It’s hard to believe that our children have been in school for a week already. I’m still wondering what happened to summer?
When the students return to school, the News staff gears up to cover as many school and sporting events that we can.
Believe me, there’s enough activitiy at the schools alone to keep us busy 24/7, throw in all the community events and a 40-hour work week quickly turns in 50 plus hours.

  • Worst Vacation Ever

Sometimes when you have high hopes for something, you end up falling flat on your face.

That’s exactly what happened when I planned a weekend trip to Holiday World recently with my 5-year-old son, my best friend and his 5-year-old son.

The stage was set for a marvelous time, a boys’ weekend featuring father-son bonding, catch-up time with my friend and a fun amusement/water park.

    Boy, was I wrong.

  • Aunt Lucy gives 100 years of love

When I was a child, someone in their 30s was just plain old.
When I advanced to my 20s, it seemed that 40-year-olds were fogeys.

When I hit the 30s, anyone in their 50s seemed over the hill.
Now that I’m in my 40s, I’m beginning to think that age is just a number.

I mean I don’t feel old and I really don’t plan on getting old as long as they continue to make hair dye in little bottles.

  • Don’t torture yourself...that’s my job

While my husband Bud and I were attempting to find something decent to watch on television the other night – and it’s a desert out there, I tell ya – I started thinking that it has been some years since I compiled a list of my favorite movie quotes.

Although there are more interesting things to write about-I didn’t.
It is sad to say that there are few quotes worth adding since the last time I updated my list. And it’s sad that two of my favorite quotes include the word “taters.”

  • Moms make tough choices

Like most kids, my daughter has her battle with the run of the mill sicknesses that every child gets. It was a Friday night like any other, my daughter was running around and I was trying to get her settled down for bed but it was Friday so I normally let her stay up a little later. I got her settled into bed, spent a little time to myself then it was off to bed for me it had been a long week and I needed a good nights sleep.

  • The return of Ricky-Bob

There lives in the J. B. Miller park, deep within the pooled, bottomless water known most commonly as “the old reservoir,” a finned behemoth called “fish” by the ignorant and “monster” by the wise.

  • A good night’s sleep

I am not a big video gamer type of guy but occasionally I will get a wild hair and fire up the ol’ Playstation 2 and play a game or two. I did it yesterday when one of my girls was trying to play a college basketball game and she was playing as my beloved Kentucky Wildcats and the other team was the rival Mississippi State Bulldogs. She was doing pretty bad (losing by 10 points…in the first quarter) so I had, to commandeer the controller from her hand and redeem my national championship teams honor. Of course, I didn’t fare much better.

  • Touch my pocket, I get steamed

I’m more than a little steamed and it’s not because of the hot weather we’ve had recently.

I’m hot under the collar because of situations and things I just can’t fathom.

  • Wishing for the old days

I sure do miss the old days.

I loved being able to conveniently go into a video store and marvel at shelf after shelf of titles to choose from.

In the mood for a scare, the horror section provided all the chills you needed.

If laughter was what you needed, rows of comedy flicks would fill your giggling desires.

There was just something about the ability to pick up a box cover, read the synopsis and glance at pics from the movie that made the experience greater.
