    SPARTA, Ky. - Tried-and-true country music artist Clay Walker will entertain more than 106,000 NASCAR fans with his rock-solid repertoire of hits before NASCAR stars Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart race for Kentucky Speedway’s inaugural Sprint Cup Series “Quaker State 400” title July 9.

    That's what Kentucky Speedway officials hope motorists bring with them to Sparta as more than 100,000 race fans create the state's third largest city July 9 for the inaugural NASCAR Sprint Cup race.

    Race fans attending the inaugural NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Kentucky Speedway “are going to be thrilled when they get here,” according to Marcus Smith, President of Speedway Motor Sports, Inc. “Thousands and thousands of race fans are going to be so excited when they get here and see all of the phenomenal improvements that we’ve made to the speedway. I think that they will all know that they have arrived at what is the newest and greatest speedway on the NASCAR circuit.”

  • Grant County Meets Cincinnati’s Sports Mascots
  • Cross Country to hold Midnight Madness

    The Grant County High School Cross County team will be holding its annual Midnight Madness July 14-15.

    The event is welcomed to anyone grades 6-12 and parents, that are interested in cross country. There will be opportunities for discounts on shoes and gear.

    At 6:30 p.m., there will be a meeting of the GCHS Cross Country Alumni Association. Any former Lady Brave or Brave runner can attend.

    At 7 p.m., there will be an athlete/parent meeting in the GCHS media center.

  • Youth Football Signups July 16

    The Grant County Youth Football and Cheerleading Fall signups will be held at Dry Ridge Elementary on the following dates:
    • 1 – 3 p.m. July 16

    The registration fee is $80 plus a $15 equipment fee. The equipment fee is refundable when all equipment is returned at the end of camp. Family discounts are available.

    Fall practice begins July 18. Practice will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at Dry Ridge Elementary.

  • Men’s softball tourney to be held July 9

    Men’s softball tournament will be held on July 9 at Mullins Fields.

    A men’s Friday night league, which will begin Aug. 5, is now forming. A coed Saturday night league will also begin Aug. 6

  • Pool restrictions lifted, safety measures continue

    Many families have been visited by an unwelcome guest this spring and summer: the Shigella bacteria. Between April 1 and June 28, more than 100 cases of Shigella were reported in Northern Kentucky.
