  • Mother of four dies in Scott crash

    Sunny Harper was just that – a mother with a sunny personality and a bright smile.

    “She was pretty happy and bubbly,” said Sheila Norman, Sunny’s friend and landlord. “She loved her family and friends.”

    The Dry Ridge mother was traveling with her husband and three of her four children to pick up her new glasses in Georgetown when the Harper’s 1991 Toyota Tercel was struck by a van pulling out of a driveway.

  • City vehicle swiped in Crittenden

    Juveniles out for a joy ride are believed to be the culprits behind a city vehicle being removed from the city garage and found on a nearby street.

    Grant County Sheriff Chuck Dills said the pickup truck was taken fromthe city’s maintenance building between Friday, March 13 and Sunday, March 15. The pickup was found near the Dalton Plaza Apartments and had no damage. “We believe that juveniles were responsible and are hoping someone will step forward and accept responsbility,” Dills said.

  • Rump signs with Georgetown

    Josh Rump helped the Grant County Braves football team earn back-to-back winning records and hopes he can continue to do that as he progresses onto the college stage.

    Rump signed to play for Georgetown College on March 17.

    “I’m excited,” Rump said. “All my life I wanted to play for Georgetown. I feel like this is a dream come true. I’m hoping I’ll be able to play my freshman year and continue to get bigger, faster and stronger.”

  • Burnin' down the house

    Firefighters from Williamstown, Corinth, Crittenden, Jonesville and Dry Ridge held a training exercise on March 14 and March 19 on Main Street and the corner of School Road in Williamstown. Firefighters set fires inside the frame home and used them for training purposes. They were unable to burn the home completely on March 14 due to high winds and a large grass fire they were called away on. The land is owned by Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home and will be the site of a new parking lot to accomodate overflow parking. Photos by Bryan Miles

  • Grant County hosts weightlifting competition

    The Grant County High School football team has been hard at work in the weight room, preparing for the second annual Grant County Strongman Invitational.

    Their work paid off as several lifters earned high marks for their performances.

  • Grant County track teams deal with busy week

    The Grant County High School track and field teams were eager to see how they measured up against other schools.

    The teams competed at the Grant County All-Comers Meet on March 19, followed by the Newport River City Classic on March 21 and the Boone County Relay on March 23.

    At the Grant County All-Comers, senior Natalie Norman took first in the 400 and 800 meter runs, while also helping the 4x400 relay team take first with Caylin Hare, Kim Simpson and Taylor Cummins.

  • Hurst named February Youth Performance winner

    The Youth Performance Award winner for February is Blair Hurst, a senior at Grant County High School.

    Hurst, 17, is the daughter of Amy Caudill of Dry Ridge and the late Ben Hurst.

    She has an older sister, Brooke Hurst, that graduated from GCHS last year.

    Her class schedule this year includes English, psychology, digital photography and co-op, where she goes to school for three classes and then she works at the Youth Service Center.

    Co-op is listed as her favorite class.

  • Library to celebrate St. Patty’s Day

    Celebrate everything Irish at the Grant County Public Library. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, the library is hosting a limerick contest for adults and teenagers with the winning entry being published in the Grant County News. The limerick must be about the library or a favorite activity at the library. Submissions must be turned in to the library by March 16 and include a name and phone number. Call 824-2080 for details.

  • Suspect eludes police after car chase

    A vehicle chase lasted more than 30 minutes on Monday, March 9 and police still didn’t get their guy.

    Kentucky State Police Trooper Chad Mills attempted to stop a pickup truck after one matching its description was stolen from Kelly Drive in Dry Ridge. The truck wouldn’t stop, so Williamstown Police put out stop sticks.

    The truck ran over them and the suspect, who is described as male wearing blue jeans jumped out and ran down Hyde Road.
