  • GCMS Braves thump East Oldham 44-0 to open season

    If there was any concern heading into the Grant County Middle School football team's season opener about the Braves resting on their laurels after a perfect 12-0 season last year, head coach Jamey Dalzell delivered a message that was loud and clear to his team—deliver a knockout punch.

    That message was received and carried out as Josh Gutman and Cody Miskell opened the game with a bone-crushing tackle and GCMS' offense stole the show en route to a 44-0 drubbing of East Oldham on Aug. 16.

  • GCHS Braves enter post Jeremy Martin golf era

    As his team teed off in its season opener on Aug. 4, Grant County boys' golf coach Lance Robinson took a moment to reflect on the past.

    "I have anticipated this for a while. I am anxious to see how the kids react after advancing to the state tournament last year as a team," Robinson said.

    Robinson also pondered the departure of Jeremy Martin, a golfer who had played for Robinson almost all of his tenure. Martin, who won the regional tournament last year, has since graduated and will play for Northern Kentucky University this season.

  • GCMS Braves hit gridiron

    It took one play for the Grant County Middle School defense to wake from its slumber against Lexington Catholic on Aug. 7.

    On the first play of the game, the Braves gave up an 80-yard run, and fortunately, Shelby Caudill was able to record a touchdown-saving tackle, giving GCMS some new life in its scrimmage.

  • Kentucky Speedway purchase reaces final lap

    The sale of Kentucky Speedway has reached the 11th hour as Speedway Motorsports Inc., Bruton Smith's company, has until Aug. 18 to decide if it will continue with its purchase of the track. Kentucky Speedway is being sold for $78.3 million, including the assumption of $63.3 million in debt.

    On May 22, Smith announced his intent of purchasing the speedway, which opened in 2000 and was built for $152 million.

  • In the Line of Fire—GCHS quarterback Joe Soden has seconds to make a decision

    In a matter of seconds, a quarterback go can from hero to zero.

    A misread of the defense can result in either an interception or a sack, while a perfectly executed play can result in either positive yardage or a touchdown.

    A season ago, Joe Soden was learning on the fly as the first-year quarterback of the Grant County High School football team, trying to be the hero more often than not. Soden, a current senior, was trying to learn the offense during both passing leagues and scrimmages with the hopes of being able to guide the Braves to a winning season, which he did.

  • GCHS volleyball opens season

    Kelli Lee is sure she'll feel butterflies when her Grant County High School volleyball team hits the floor Thursday, Aug. 14, for its regular season opener against Bullitt Central.

    While this is not her first year coaching the sport, this is her first season coaching at her alma mater, something that Lee acknowledges is both special and full of pressure.

  • I am utterly embarrassed with the Cincinnati Reds

    The following is an open letter to Bob Castellini, owner of the Cincinnati Reds:

    Mr. Castellini,

    As I write this letter to you, I would imagine it is fair to say the fire sale has begun in Cincinnati. In a matter of 11 days, you have managed to get rid of Ken Griffey Jr., David Ross and Adam Dunn and there is nothing to show for it.

    Of the players received in the wheeling and dealing, only one, pitcher Nick Masset, is on the current roster. In exchange for Dunn, your team picked up Class A pitcher Dallas Buck, a guy who has already had Tommy John Surgery.

  • Lady Demons field a young golf squad

    With only five golfers, two of whom were on the team last year, the Williamstown High School girls' golf team enters the 2008 golf season short on numbers, but not on talent.

    Williamstown's top two golfers are junior Kara Caldwell and sophomore Ali Rich, both of whom had success last year. Other golfers include sophomores Brittney Elliott and Taylor Jacobs and a fifth grader, none of whom have any experience.

    In addition to the three new faces, Williamstown also has a new coach this year as Al Rich replaces Stephanie Caldwell, who resigned.

  • Indy Racing League invades Kentucky Speedway

    Fans seeking a thrill for speed are in for a treat this weekend when the cars of the Indy Racing League invade Kentucky Speedway for the "Meijer Indy 300 Presented by Pepsi and Edy's." The race, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 9 is the fifth and final race of the 2008 schedule at the speedway.

    A season ago, fans watched Tony Kanaan led 131 of 200 laps on his way to victory lane in a race that featured several bizarre moments in the final laps.

  • Grant County Youth Football League opens practice, needs players

    For a decade, Allen and Tricia Burkhart have played vital roles in the formation of the North Central Kentucky Youth Fooltball League and the Grant County Youth Football League.

    With practices underway, this season promises to be no different as the husband-wife duo are enjoying the early practices with the hopes of putting a competitive league on the field.

    "Our main goal is to teach these young players the fundamentals and basics of football. We want them to love the sport and continue playing through high school," Tricia said.
