  • Lady Demons open volleyball season

    For the third time in as many seasons, the Williamstown High School volleyball team opened practice with a new coach.

    At the helm this season is Kim Anglin, who replaces Kelli Lee. Lee resigned her position at the conclusion of last season and is the new coach at Grant County High School.

    "I have big shoes to fill, but the girls and coaches have promised each other that we will work hard," said Anglin.

    Anglin acknowledged feeling "nervous" about being the new coach as she has been around the sport for five days.

  • Lady Braves open volleyball season with new coach

    Grant County High School volleyball coach Kelli Lee wasted little time putting her stamp on her new team. After inheriting a Lady Braves team that finished last season with a 6-12 record, including seven straight losses to end the season, Lee reached out to coaches Steve Williams and Cabot Keeser to conduct a camp.

    The decision by Lee paid dividends as her team gained valuable knowledge from Keeser and Williams, who performed an "extreme makeover," according to Lee.

  • Cincinnati Bengals open training camp Monday

    The distance between Cincinnati and Georgetown College, home of the Cincinnati Bengals training camp, is 76 miles.

    Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis hopes that is enough distance to place between his team and the off-the-field issues which featured both Chris Henry and Odell Thurman being released. In addition, Lewis and the Bengals hope to find the answers—when they open camp on Monday, July 28—that will send the Bengals into the playoffs for the first time since the 2005 season.

  • Where Are They Now: GCHS hoops standout enjoys being an attorney

    Despite the fact his last high school basketball game was three decades ago, Steve Howe can remember vividly plays and scores like the games were yesterday.

    During the 1978-79 season, Howe and his Grant County High School boys basketball teammates took the state by storm, reeling off a 34-2 record, winning the regional tournament and earning a spot in the top 10 polls.

  • GCHS gridiron member draws attention from Centre College

    The last three years on the Grant County High School football gridiron are beginning to pay off for Braves senior Rex Benson, who was recently invited to a meeting with the coaching staff at Centre College. While there, Benson met individually with linebackers coach Carter Conley, took a tour of the campus and met with other prospective players.

  • Racing returns to Kentucky Speedway this weekend

    With the temperatures heating up, Kentucky Speedway officials are hoping that the racing will also heat up July 18 and 19 as the ARCA RE/MAX Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series both invade the track in Sparta.

    The ARCA RE/MAX Series will kick off the racing weekend on July 18 with the Kentucky 150. Last year, Michael McDowell proved to be lucky on Friday the 13th, using a late pit stop and pass on his way to Victory Lane.

    McDowell drove past Cale Gale on lap 86, cruising to a victory of more than four seconds.

  • The Long Road Back: GCHS' Gorby overcomes torn ACL to earn All-Star spot

    The last seven months have had their share of highs and lows for Grant County High School girls basketball senior Candace Gorby.

    The lowest of the lows wasnt the fact she tore her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) during a 49-25 loss to Pendleton County on Jan. 15.

    Instead, rock bottom came when Gorby, a self-described "gym rat," was told her season was over and rather than dressing out for games, she was forced to sitting on the sidelines and cheering her teammates on.

    With his team flirting with the .500 mark at the All-Star break, Florence Freedom manager Jamie Keefe can pinpoint exactly where his team must make a change if they are going to compete for the Frontier League East division championship.

    "We need to improve our pitching, which has struggled some this season," Keefe said. Keefe is in his fourth season at the helm.

  • Lawrence wins Amateur championship for third time

    Alicia Lawrence gave her caddy, Jeremy Martin, strict instructions during the final round of the Northern Kentucky Amateur women's championships—she didn't want to know where she was on the leader board.

    "I didn't know until after my chip on 18," Lawrence said, who participated in the tournament at Pendleton Country Club last week.
