  • Household hazardous waste to be collected

    It may not be spring, but Grant County residents have an opportunity to do some major cleaning.

    For the first time, household hazardous waste will be collected during an event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, in the Grant County High School parking lot.

    “We’ve never had an event to take care of the stuff that you can’t necessarily not put out to the garbage, but you probably shouldn’t,” said Bryan Miles, Grant County solid waste coordinator.

  • GCMS rolls over Owen County in playoffs

    With only one loss on the season, the Grant County Middle School football team wanted revenge and it tasted sweet when they got it.

    The Braves avenged their only loss, defeating rival Owen County 30-8 in the first round of the state playoffs.

    “It’s a big win,” coach Jamey Dalzell said. “It’s a satisfying win because we knew we were the better team.”

    The Braves found themselves down 8-0 early, but dominated after that.

  • Demons prepare for region

    The runners who represent Williamstown are young, but they’re talented and they’re hoping that talent will translate into success.

    “We’re getting our sights set on regionals,” coach Michelle Whaley said. “We haven’t really worried about how we’ve performed at meets lately, but more on getting our times down and looking at the regional teams we’re facing. All of the times are coming down and the runners are setting personal records. It’s motivating them for regionals.”

  • Dry Ridge moist issue questioned

    The Dry Ridge moist vote hit a possible snag Friday, Oct. 17, after court papers were filed asking a judge to decide if the local option election can continue on the ballot in its current language.

    Grant County Attorney Jack Gatlin filed a petition for declaratory judgement on behalf of Grant County Clerk Leatha Conrad in circuit court after a question arose about the difference in wording in the certified petition filed by J.B. Barnes and the state law that allows for a local option election on alcohol sales.

  • "It's not really where you are, but who you're with"

    As her senior year goes along, Samantha Ransom is busy with classes and singing with the choir, but she’s still taking time to enjoy her last year at Grant County High School.

    “When the year started, it was like every night there was something going on,” Ransom said. “I either had homework or I was going to a soccer game or a football game. It was crazy. It’s awesome. I love doing stuff with my friends.”

    As the time passes though, she realizes that this is a year full of lasts.

  • Battle at Bourbon

    As the crowd fell silent, Cory Kearns stood alone in the net. The only thing standing between a date in the regional championship and the Grant County Braves was a Bourbon County player. The thud of a foot striking the ball echoed across the field before a second thud caused the players and fans to scream. Cory Kearns had ended Bourbon County’s season.

    His teammates rushed him as the Grant County boys’ soccer team earned the right to vie for the region championship, defeating Bourbon County in penalty kicks, 3-1.

  • Dry Ridge woman is MSU queen candidate

    Morehead State University will crown its 2008 Homecoming Queen and King during halftime ceremonies of the football game against Jacksonville that begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Jayne Stadium.

    Ten candidates are vying for the title of Homecoming Queen and King.

    The queen nominees include a Grant County resident.

    Jamie Fay of Dry Ridge, is the daughter of James and Tonya Fay. She is an elementary education major, a member of the Kentucky Education Association Student Program and Delta Zeta sorority, her sponsor for the competition.

  • GCHS girls’ soccer season ends in district tourney

    The Grant County girls’ soccer team had hoped to make some noise in the district tournament, but Mason County had other ideas.

    The Lady Braves ended their season with a 4-1 loss to Mason County in the first round of the district tournament, held at Walton-Verona.

    “The girls played very hard,” coach Eric Ashcraft said. “They’ve made a huge improvement from last year to this year. I’m very impressed with how they played. I couldn’t have asked for anything more from them.”

  • OUCH!

    Influenza causes an average of 36,000 deaths and more than 200,000 hospitalizations every year across the country.

    “The danger is not so much from the flu itself, but, if you’re sick with the flu, you are more susceptible for complications,” said Emily Gresham Wherle, public information manager for Northern Kentucky Health Department. “Pneumonia is a good example.”

    However, receiving an annual vaccination can help prevent contracting the flu, Wherle said.
