Families who need a helping hand this holiday season have until Nov. 14 to sign up at their school’s family resource center.

Parents or guardians should contact the school where their child or children attend to register and receive participation information.

The deadline has passed to sign up at Crittenden-Mount Zion Elementary, but names are still being taken at Dry Ridge, Sherman, Mason-Corinth, Grant County Middle and Grant County High School.

A significant drop in gas prices in the past week caused cars to line up onto the street waiting to fill up at some Grant County stations.

While fuel prices have recently dipped well below $2 — a sight that has not been seen in months — the marquees at several stations displayed a per-gallon cost as low $1.75.

The AAA Fuel Price Finder on Tuesday, Nov. 4, listed an area average for a gallon of gas in Dry Ridge and Williamstown at $1.99 compared to $2.33 and $3.40 last week and six months ago, respectively.

Christmas may be better known for houses decorated with colorful lights and endless shopping for gifts, but Halloween also causes consumers to open their wallets.

With costumes, candy, pumpkins and frightful decorations, Halloween spending in 2008 is estimated to reach $5.77 billion nationwide, according to a recent National Retail Federation survey.

The average per-person spending on Halloween has increased drastically in the past seven years, from $44.50 in 2001 to a new estimated high of $66.54 this year.

Sixteen marching bands competed in the Class A regional competition on Oct. 25 at Beechwood High School.

Williamstown Band of Spirit took the field at 4 p.m. and entertained the crowd with their best performance of the season.

When the top eight bands were announced Saturday evening, Williamstown was named among Beechwood, Hazard, Lee County, Nicholas County, Pineville, Harlan, and Paris to advance to state competition on Nov. 1 in Louisville.
