  • Lanter celebrates 90 years

    Ann Lanter’s 90th birthday on Nov. 16, 2008 was celebrated by members of the Faithful Workers Sunday school class at Dry Ridge Baptist Church, a class she taught until a few months ago.

    Post 6 Kentucky State Police retired troopers, officers and staff attended as well. Lanter retired from Post 6 in Dry Ridge.

    Family members and friends attended the celebration and shared punch, cake and other delicacies with Lanter.

    Alexander Reunion

    The descendants of the late Ollie and Agnes Speagle Alexander attempted to meet at Walton Park on Sept. 14, 2008 for their annual reunion. Due to the remnants of Hurricane Ike, the event was moved to a cousin’s home.

    Those attending were:

    From out of state: Donald and Juva Alexander of Jackson, Mich. And Donna Alexander of Ypsilanti, Mich., Paul W. and Doris Alexander of Vevay, Ind. and Robert Alexander and Pam Lucas of Madison, Ind.

  • Lady Braves host Grant County Invitational

    Eight teams will come to Grant County, but only one will leave a champion.

    The Lady Braves will host the Grant County Invitational from Dec. 18 to Dec. 23. Grant County, Williamstown, Lexington Sayre, Ludlow, Dayton, Silver Grove, Eminence and Newport will compete. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students.

  • Troopers spread holiday cheer, presents

    Saturday, Dec. 6 was cold.

    It was definitely a day for gloves and a warm, winter coat.

    Olivia, a bright-eyed, pint-sized blond, didn’t have a coat to call her own, but by the end of Shop With A Trooper, she was dancing around, proudly showing to anyone who would look, her new hot pink coat with a hood.

    A dozen troopers and supervisors from Kentucky State Police Post 6 in Dry Ridge took 25 children from 10 counties to breakfast and lunch, followed by shopping and visits with Santa as part of the Shop With A Trooper program.

  • Grant County girls’ battle Walton-Verona

    Early turnovers helped the Grant County Lady Braves, but late turnovers helped Walton-Verona come away with a 44-33 win on Dec. 11.

    “We played hard, competed and had a chance to win,” coach Darrell Guffey said. “Turnovers and defensive rebounding have been the key for us all year. We need to stick our nose in there and box out. We came out aggressive and that was good. We got much better and that’s the important thing.”

  • Trees, decorations can be fire hazard

    Colorful lights, luminous candles and other Christmas decorations can lead a cheerful holiday to go up in flames without safety precautions.

    Each year, fire departments across the country respond to an average of 210 structure fires caused by Christmas trees, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

    Forty-nine percent of those fires are caused by electrical problems while 27 percent are caused by a heat source being too close to the tree.
