  • Lady Demons have rocky first few games

    Williamstown’s girls faced two tough teams to start the Grant County Invitational, but also faced other adversity.

    Against Sayre and Ludlow, the Lady Demons were unable to come away with a win, falling 49-33 to Sayre and 74-47 to Ludlow. During their game against Sayre, the Lady Demons lost one of their top players as Tori Wilhoit sprained her ankle, forcing her out of the game and left her on the bench against Ludlow. They hoped to have her back for their next game against Dayton on Dec. 22.

    A free smoking cessation program can help you save more than $21 per week if you successfully quit smoking, based on the average cost of cigarettes for someone who smokes a pack a day.

    Three sessions of the Cooper-Clayton smoking cessation program start soon. The Cooper-Clayton Method to Stop Smoking program is a comprehensive, 13-week program that helps participants stop smoking with peer support, educational guidance and nicotine replacement therapy.   • Dry Ridge is moist

    Dry Ridge officially is moist.

    The city council adopted an ordinance on Monday, Dec. 22, allowing alcohol sales by the drink at restaurants and dining facilities with a seating capacity of at least 100 people and which derive at least 70 percent of their gross receipts from the sale of food.

    The ordinance came after voters passed a local option to allow alcohol sales in the November election.

    Mayor Clay Crupper said an ordinance needed to be passed within 60 days after the election.

  • Lady Liberty

    When Felicity Spicer walks into a room, her 100-watt smile gets noticed.

    Spicer’s charm, personality and poise garnered her the title of 2008 Grant County High School Homecoming Queen which led to an invitation to make an appearance at the Liberty Bowl on Jan. 2 in Memphis.

    “This door is definitely opened by the hand of God because I couldn’t have dreamed of such an honor,” Spicer said.

  • Decorations bring Williamstown family together

    For Jeremy Souder, decorating at Christmas time is a tradition his children don’t ever forget.

    “It’s something me and my kids do together every year. If it wasn’t for them, I probably wouldn’t do everything we do,” Souder said. “But it’s what we do. We’ve got more decorations in the attic that we didn’t put out this year.”

    With their house on Main Street in Williamstown, the Souders decorate and display their Christmas spirit to all who pass by.

  • Gifted and talented students learn hands-on math

    Dry Ridge Elementary fifth grader Coleman Epperson found it difficult to build a tower out of the limited materials he was given.

    “We finally have something built. I know it’s pathetic, but to build a right tower I need wood, nails, a hammer and a blowtorch,” he said.

    Unfortunately for Coleman and his 10 other fellow Gifted and Talented students, all they had was tape, spaghetti noodles and small marshmallows to build their structure.

  • Rivalry starts anew

    With the start of a new year, an old rivalry will once again begin.

    On Jan. 5, the Grant County girls’ basketball team will play at Williamstown, with both teams looking to take the first game of the rivalry this season.

    Last season, the girls’ split the season series with each team winning on their home court.

  • Koebcke makes the grade as a NAIA Scholar-Athlete

    Union College’s Nathan Koebcke was one of 264 student-athletes to be honored as a 2008 Daktronics-NAIA Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete.

    Koebcke, a junior goalkeeper from Williamstown, is the 15th player in program history to be honored as Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete. The last Bulldog to make the list was Dustin Isom in 2006. In all, 17 Union players have made the team since 1998.

    It is that time of year again, the time you sit down and make your list of things you’ll do different or things you want to change. And if you’re anything like me, around Jan. 2, the New Year’s resolutions that you made already seem to be forgotten.

    I don’t know what it is about the resolutions that make them so hard for me to stick to them. Maybe I make too many, or maybe I make the same ones each year hoping that this year will be different.

  • Lady Braves earn spot in Invitational championship

    The GCHS Lady Braves started the Grant County Invitational with two wins and didn’t want to end their streak.

    With a 51-43 win over Newport, the girls ran their streak to three wins in a row, putting them over .500 for the season, and earning them a spot in the championship game.

    “I thought we really executed well in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter,” coach Darrell Guffey said. “When they make plays, that makes it easy.”
