  • Farm Service Agency to close Jan. 15

    The Farm Service Agency, located on Barnes Road in Williamstown will close on Jan. 15.

    As part of a restructuring process that began in 2005, the Grant County office will be consolidated with the Pendleton County office located at 400 Main Street in Falmouth.

  • Lady Demons win at home

    The Grant County Lady Braves and the Williamstown Lady Demons each wanted to win.

    Tied heading into the fourth quarter, the game between the county rivals came down to which team executed down the stretch.

    The Lady Demons made their free throws and slowed Grant County’s defense on their way to a 51-45 victory.

  • Help with groceries is here

    How would you like to spend $30 for groceries and walk away with enough food to feed a family of four for a week?

    It’s possible, Kim McKinnon said.

    McKinnon and other members of Family Worship Center have gotten involved with Angel Food Ministries, a non-profit, non-denominational relief and support group helping communities across the United States.

    “With this economy, we felt like we needed to help families,” said McKinnon. “This isn’t about Family Worship Center. We want the other churches and the community to get involved.”

  • Things to be thankful for this New Year

    In December of 2007, I lost a friend.

    Only two years older than me, Kyle was a friend from high school. Since he could drive, he would help me get from place to place, coming in through the clutch over and over again whenever I needed a ride.

    When he died, I took it hard. I hear all the time that young people think they’re invincible and nothing can ever harm them. I knew that wasn’t true, but when Kyle passed, I had to confront the fact that I had taken things for granted.

  • Icy roads lead to hazardous driving

    The weather outside was frightful on Tuesday, Dec. 23 for motorists and local first responders.

    Drizzling rain and freezing temperatures led to icy roadways and countless wrecks.

    A pickup truck overturned on the U.S. 25 bypass at 4:30 p.m., beginning an onslaught of calls that did not end until late, said Dry Ridge Fire Chief Robert Bruin.

  • Looking back at 2008

    The year 2008 brought Grant County a lot of changes, as well as tragedy and triumph. During the year, Grant Countians faced adversity by acts of nature and crimes committed against each other. The community said farewell to fallen soldiers, former political leaders and teenagers who died much too young. The community also celebrated the opening of a new school in Sherman and a national cemetery in Williamstown. It was a year of sad endings and new beginnings. As 2009 begins, we take a moment to glance back at the news that made 2008 a year to remember.

  • Simpsons celebrate 72 years

    Johnny and Williah Simpson will celebrate their 72nd anniversary on Jan. 10, 2009.

    Johnny and Williah were married at the Grant County Court House in Williamstown.

    The couple have four children.

    Their names are Wilbur Simpson, Betty Rodgers and Beverly Mulberry, all of Crittenden, and the late Layle Simpson.

    The couple has four grandchildren, Brian Rodgers, Michelle King, Deanna Gabbert and Dustin Mulberry and six great grandchildren, Brittany, Morgan, Mason, Cody, Carter and Parker.

  • Fire symposium set for Jan. 17, Jan. 18

    The Dry Ridge Fire Department will host its second fire symposium featuring two nationally recognized speakers.

    This year’s symposium is planned for Jan. 17 and Jan. 18 at Grant County High School.

    The cost of the symposium is $75 and includes breakfast and lunch both days.

    In order to reduce and possibly eliminate the cost to local volunteer firefighters, sponsors from the community are needed. Businesses, individuals or organizations choosing to sponsor a fire fighter will be recognized on a banner and during the programs.
