    A $1 million gift from Dry Ridge resident Larry Spears will create the first-ever endowed chair in the University of Kentucky’s College of Pharmacy.

    Larry Spears, a 1959 UK College of Pharmacy alumnus, was recognized for his donation at an Aug. 24 ceremony at UK.

  • Aquatic center moves to board, council

    Just a year after joint discussions began with the Williamstown school district and Williamstown City Council on a lifestyle/aquatic center, the project is taking shape.

    Last week, Margie Jacobs of Tate/Hill/Jacobs Architects Inc. in Lexington, met with members of both groups to present a feasibility study and preliminary drawings of what the facility might look like.

  • Job seekers can get free help

    If you’re looking for a job, want to polish your interview skills and find out what will make you more likely to land a job – then the Grant County Public Library has a new program for you.

    The library will be the site of a Public Library Workforce Center, a program that Wynita Worley, public services librarian, has been working on for a couple of years.

    “We want to provide some training that we haven’t before or enhance what we currently offer,” she said.

  • Demons place third behind Grant, Gallatin

    When: Aug. 18
    Where: Eagle Creek Country Club
    What: The Williamstown boy’s golf team placed third in a match with Grant County and Gallatin County, shooting a 196. Grant County and Gallatin County tied with a score of 189. Williamstown senior Sean Moreland was the medalist shooting a 40.

  • Braves golf falls to Newport Central Catholic

    When: Aug. 17
    Where: Eagle Creek Country Club
    What: The Braves golf team fell just three strokes shy of tying Newport Central Catholic, which is ranked second in the region. Medalist for the match was Braves senior Tim Livingood with an even par 35 strokes on the front nine at Eagle Creek Country Club. Cody Kellam scored a 42, Jacob Vrolijk 43, Brian Perry 43, Trey Adams 49 and Luke Adkins 50.

  • Kellam leads Lady Braves over St. Henry

    When: Aug. 17
    Where: Eagle Creek Country Club
    What: The Lady Braves defeated St. Henry 191-220. Sarah Kellam was the medalist for the match with a four-over-par 40 on the front nine at Eagle Creek Country Club. Macy Wright and Sarah Boden scored 49 and Hannah Davis had 53. Top scorer for St. Henry was Ashley Schnieder with a 47. The Lady Braves match record is now 2-0.

  • Munson-Sowder family continues tradition

    On July 23, 2011 the descendants of Effie Mae Munson and Ferdinand Desoto Sowder held a reunion at the Corinth Community Center. Their children were: Cannon (Frances), Andrew (Ruth), Roger, Josephine (Wesley) Underwood, Wanda (Enoch) Colley, Emerson, Kenneth (Emma), Joyce (Carter) Palmer and Emma Jean (Buford)Beckham. Their only living child, Joyce Palmer was present. Everyone renewed acquaintances, as most had not seen each other in over 20 years.  

  • Lady Demons come back to defeat Carroll Co.

    When: Aug. 17
    Where: Williamstown High School
    What: The Lady Demons, after falling behind in the first set, came back to defeat Carroll County in the final two sets to get their second win of the season.
    Results: 17-25 L, 25-18 W, 25-23 W

  • Luttrell-Caldwell plan wedding

    Shawna Lynn Luttrell and Tyler Joseph Caldwell would like to announce their engagement and forthcoming wedding.

    The wedding is planned for 3:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Sherman Full Gospel Church.

    The bride is a 2008 graduate of Williamstown High School and is a business manager for Save-A-Lot.

    The groom is a 2010 graduate of Leslie County High School and works as a coal miner for Bledsoe Coal Company.
     

  • Lady Braves win first game of season

    When: Aug. 17
    Where: GCHS
    What: The Lady Braves were able to muster up their first win of the season defeating the Bellevue Lady Tigers in three sets. Junior Maria Smith had six aces in the second set, but the team was unable to win, forcing a third set where the Lady Braves won to win the match.
    Results: 25-21 W, 21-25 L, 25-17 W
