  • Demons fall in overtime to Pioneers

    The Williamstown Demons were confident going into their district tournament game against Simon Kenton, playing on their home court and coming off a big district win over Walton-Verona.

    Both teams battled with each other, matching basket for basket for four quarters before the Demons took the Pioneers into overtime, eventually falling 73-69 on Feb. 24.

  • Braves earn second place in district tourney

    The Grant County Braves had a plan heading into the district tournament to earn at least one win and advance to the region tournament.

    With their 59-45 win over Walton-Verona on Feb. 25, the Braves did just that. The next phase of the plan was to eliminate Simon Kenton en route to a district championship.

    The Braves battled the Pioneers before falling 54-51 on Feb. 27 to take second place in the district.

    Grant County Sheriff's Office

    Deputy Brian Maines investigated an accident at 8 p.m. on Feb. 19 on the Dry Ridge exit ramp. The drivers involved were Natalie N. Owings, 18, of Crittenden driving a 2003 Ford and Lisa T. Combs, 46, of Williamstown driving a 1996 Mercury.

    Deputy Andy Reeves investigated an accident at 9 a.m. on Feb. 20 on Mason Sipple Road in Williamstown. The driver involved was James W. Morgan, 71, of Williamstown driving a 2004 Cadillac that struck a deer.

    Two local legislators recently voted in opposition of each other in a state budget proposal that included a 30-cent cigarette tax increase.

    Sen. Damon Thayer, R-Georgetown, voted against the measure designed to help the state dig out from a $456 million budget shortfall.

    • The Grant County Industrial Development Authority will meet at 1:30 p.m. March 11 at the Chamber of Commerce in Williamstown.

    • The Grant County Democratic Women’s Club will meet at 7 p.m. March 5 at the Williamstown Senior Citizens Center, located at the rear of the city building.

  • GCHS freshmen team wins district

    The GCHS freshmen boys’ basketball team earned the district championship to end the 2008-09 season.

    The team worked hard to develop their skills and were eager to learn from their coach, Tyler Jones.

    “I wanted my boys to develop as a team and also as young men,” Jones said. “They were very eager to learn and worked extremely hard to accomplish their goals. They are an exceptional group of young men that rallied together.”

    The Braves finished the season 17-3, developing the desire to win as the season went along.

  • Third grade boys win NCKC championship

    The Williamstown third grade boys’ basketball team knew coming into the season that they had the talent and the ability to claim the NCKC championship.

    The previous year, the boys lost in the championship to Walton-Verona by eight points, which became the team’s motto this year. “Eight more points” is all they needed to make up for last year’s loss.

    They earned the championship this year with a 24-18 win over Walton-Verona. The Demons used a balanced attack, as no player scored more than four points.
