  • Track team uses indoor season to improve

    The Grant County High School track team is hoping for big things this spring as they work hard this winter to improve.

    The team traveled to Lexington on Jan. 24 to compete in the Wildcat Classic at the University of Kentucky against 50 other teams.

  • Crittenden man indicted for baby's murder

    A Crittenden man was indicted Feb. 11 for the murder of a 13-month-old baby girl.

    Douglas Barnhill, 24, is accused of hitting the child, Kiara Smith, in the head.

    Detectives from Kentucky State Police Post 6 in Dry Ridge were called to St. Luke Hospital in Florence on Jan. 4 to investigate the baby’s death.

    According to a press release issued by the KSP, Barnhill called 911 on Jan. 4 and reported that “the child had fallen and struck her head at his residence.”

  • Demons torch Covington Latin for big victory

    The Williamstown Demons wanted to do something special on their senior night.

    They came away with a 92-42 win over Covington Latin for their final game before the district tournament.

    “It was a good senior night game for us,” coach Stacey May said. “I let the seniors play all of the first half and a majority of the third quarter. These seniors went out with a win on their home floor.”

    The Demons took an early lead, dominating an overmatched Covington Latin team. The Demons used a combination of experience and talent to earn the win.

  • Area players named to all-region team

    Hard work and dedication to the sport of basketball has paid off for several players who were named to the all-region team.

    Williamstown Lady Demons Jaclyn Stith and Tori Wilhoit were named to the girls’ team, while Grant County Braves Caleb Kinmon and Kody Thompson were named to the boys’ team. Grant County coach Ron Kinmon was named all-region coach.

    Stith was named to the team for the second year in a row.

  • Season comes to a close for Lady Demons

    The Williamstown Lady Demons had aspirations of making it to the region tournament this season and all that stood in their way was their first round matchup with Walton-Verona in the district tournament.

    With a win, the Lady Demons would have ensured a trip to the region tournament, regardless of the outcome in the district championship.

    Unfortunately, they came away from their showdown with Walton-Verona with a 53-35 loss.

  • Lady Braves run into tough Lady Pioneers’ team

    After battling Simon Kenton twice this year, the Grant County Lady Braves knew that they would have to play to near perfection to come away with a win against the Lady Pioneers in the district tournament.

    They knew they would have to deal with their full-court pressure and prevent the Lady Pioneers from taking a huge early lead.

    The Lady Braves fought, but ended up falling 63-35 in the first round to Simon Kenton.

  • GCHS student takes part in historical inauguration

    GCHS freshman Chelsea Cason knew that she was going to witness history, but didn’t imagine what else would come with it.

    Cason went to the national Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference and was in Washington, D.C. for President Barack Obama’s inauguration on Jan. 20. She was in the nation’s capital for the historic event and enjoyed a week full of speakers and exploring the history of the capital.

  • BREAKING NEWS - 1-year-old dies from "multiple blows to head"

    A Crittenden man has been indicted for murder in the death of a 1-year-old child.

    Douglas Barnhill, 24, was indicted today (Wednesday, Feb. 11) by a Grant County grand jury.

    The child, Kiara Smith, was pronounced dead by the Boone County coroner, after she was taken to St. Luke West Hospital in Florence on Jan. 4. The medical examiner determined that she died as "a result of multiple blows to the head."

  • Lady Braves celebrate senior night with a win

    The Grant County Lady Braves celebrated their two seniors’ careers with gifts and flowers, recognizing the contributions they have made to the program.

    The Lady Braves recognized Candace Gorby and Shayna Lockard, the team’s two seniors.

    They followed that up with a resounding 43-18 win over Lloyd Memorial on Feb. 14.

    The Lady Braves dominated early, holding a 15-3 lead after the first quarter and 28-9 at the half. In their next two games, Lloyd Memorial scored over 40 points, but the Lady Braves defense shut down their offense.
