The nationwide opioid epidemic continued taking its lethal toll on Kentucky last year, driving up overdose deaths to unprecedented levels with an ever-stronger mix of fentanyl, heroin and prescription pills.
According to a report released Tuesday by the Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy, fatal overdoses totaled 1,404 in 2016, a 7.4 percent increase from the previous year. Of those cases, toxicology data was available for 1,330 deaths.

FRANKFORT – Most new laws approved during the Kentucky General Assembly’s 2017 regular session will go into effect on Thursday, June 29.
The Kentucky Constitution specifies that new laws take effect 90 days after the adjournment of the legislature unless they have a special effective date, are general appropriations measures, or include an emergency clause that makes them effective immediately upon becoming law. Final adjournment of the 2017 Regular Session was on March 30, making June 29 the normal effective date for most bills.

FRANKFORT - A Grant County man was found guilty of four counts of possession of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor, Class D felony.
On June 21, after a two-day trial in Scott Circuit Court a jury returned a guilty verdict against Michael Fields, 39, of Dry Ridge.
The conviction is a culmination of an investigation by the Attorney General’s Cyber Crimes Branch into Fields’s online activity, a state news release said.
