  • DETECTION: Is meth being manufactured near you?

    Signs of meth manufacturing and use are all around.

    Whether it’s the smell of the product, the behavior of the user or the gathering of common ingredients used to make meth, the puzzle pieces are there.

    “With methamphetamine being an upper, it increases your heart rate, keeps you up and keeps you alert,” said Grant County Sheriff Chuck Dills. “You stay up for several days. What we recognize is being fidgety and paranoid.

  • Fire destroys Dry Ridge home

    While Larry and Mary Creekmore stood helplessly outside their sprawling home on Boltz Lake, fire ravaged the brick structure, destroying all the couple’s treasured collections and belongings.

    “We didn’t save one thing,” Mary said.

    Larry was able to grab a jewelry box and a couple of his guns, but other than that, the home and contents were a total loss.

    Mary, a real estate agent, and her husband, Larry, a retiree, had lived in the home for over four years.

  • Detention Center opens canteen

    A former Grant County Detention Center library has been transformed into a store where inmates can purchase everything from Slush Puppy drinks and snacks to toiletries and 15-inch digital TVs.
    The Grant County Detention Center Canteen opened Feb. 25 to the delight of many inmates.
    “I’m like a kid in a candy store,” said one inmate as he filled up his bag.
    The canteen is the first of its kind in a detention center in Kentucky, said Jailer Terry Peeples.

    That was the overall feeling from four Grant County inmates when asked if making pseudoephedrine a prescription drug would deter methamphetamine manufacturers.

  • METH MESS

    Numbers don’t lie. Kentucky State Police reports that there were 1,080 methamphetamine labs found statewide during 2010, exceeding all previous year totals.

    From 2004 to 2009, there were 11,465 meth-related arrests in the state.

    There were at least six meth lab busts in Grant County in 2010, including three at Locus Ridge Apartments in Dry Ridge in a three-month span.

  • Corinth robbery suspects nabbed

    The Corinth Marathon was the victim of another robbery this week, but police were able to nab four suspects, thanks to an observant customer.

    The suspects, all from Bowling Green, are now guests at the Grant County Detention Center.

  • State police investigate shooting

    A Dry Ridge man is in jail after allegedly shooting a woman in Pendleton County.

    The incident occurred at 12:37 a.m. on Feb. 27 on Kells Road.

    The call came in as a fight in progress and when troopers from Kentucky State Police Post 6 arrived at the home they found Sharli Bowman, 30, had been shot. The wound was non-life threatening.

    Bowman was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Grant County where she was later flown by helicopter to University Hospital in Cincinnati.

  • BURN BAN IN PLACE

    Grant County fire fighters were glad to see the recent rains.

    During the last four weeks, each of the county’s five fire departments have been busy with grass fires, as many as eight in a two-day time frame.

    Williamstown Fire Chief Les Whalen said his department had fought 10 grass fires since the beginning of February.

    “That’s way above what we normally have,” he said.

  • PASTOR & PORN

    FBI agents raided a Crittenden home on Feb. 18 and arrested a Dry Ridge pastor on charges he used a social networking site to post and solicit child pornography.

    Jerry Cannon, 62 of Crittenden, was taken into custody by FBI agents around 9:30 a.m. and lodged in the Boone County Detention Center.

    He is accused of setting up fake Facebook profiles where he allegedly posted photos and videos of child pornography.
