  • Grant County schools set new regulations

    The Grant County Schools Food Service is implementing new regulations and procedures relating to charges for food purchased in the cafeterias. The new regulations do not, in any way, relate, affect or change anything for students who have already applied and qualify for free meals via the Federal Free/Reduced Priced Meal Program for the 2008-09 school year -- students receiving free meals will continue to do so.

  • Out of Africa

    Awa has returned home to Grant County.

    That was the African name given to 26-year-old Krystal Hutchinson during her more than two-year mission trip to Mali in West Africa.

    The Dry Ridge resident arrived home in mid-November to a slew of signs and happy family members and friends.

  • Anti-drug group hosts champions night

    The Champions For A Drug Free Grant County are hosting champions night at two upcoming ballgames.

    Students will be admitted free to the following home games:

    • 6 p.m. - Jan. 12 - The GC Lady Braves take on the Lady Wildcats of Pendleton County

    • 7:30 p.m. - Jan. 13 - The GC Braves face off against the Owen County Rebels

  • Relay kickoff set for Jan. 19

    Are you ready to relay? The Grant County Relay For Life gets started with a bang on Jan. 19. A kickoff breakfast has been planned for 8 a.m. at Dana Corporation (in the conference room.) An evening kickoff has been planned for 6 p.m. at Grant County Deposit Bank (next to Tractor Supply) in Williamstown.

    The relay is the signature fund raising event for the American Cancer Society. Money is used for programs and research. The kickoff event is open to business owners, team captains, cancer survivors or those just wanting more information about the relay.

  • Fire damages church

    A Crittenden church under construction was damaged by a fire shortly before 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30.

    Firefighters from Dry Ridge, Williamstown, Crittenden and Walton responded to the fire at Violet Ridge Church of Christ after someone saw smoke coming from the basement, said Dry Ridge Fire Chief Robert Bruin.

    “When our guys went in the floor was weak and there was a hole burnt out,” he said. “We went and cut the joist behind the burnt area and got (the joist) on out. They have to be replaced anyway. It just keeps it from catching back on fire.”

    A free smoking cessation program can help you save more than $21 per week if you successfully quit smoking, based on the average cost of cigarettes for someone who smokes a pack a day.

    Three sessions of the Cooper-Clayton smoking cessation program start soon. The Cooper-Clayton Method to Stop Smoking program is a comprehensive, 13-week program that helps participants stop smoking with peer support, educational guidance and nicotine replacement therapy.   • Dry Ridge is moist

    Dry Ridge officially is moist.

    The city council adopted an ordinance on Monday, Dec. 22, allowing alcohol sales by the drink at restaurants and dining facilities with a seating capacity of at least 100 people and which derive at least 70 percent of their gross receipts from the sale of food.

    The ordinance came after voters passed a local option to allow alcohol sales in the November election.

    Mayor Clay Crupper said an ordinance needed to be passed within 60 days after the election.

  • Lady Liberty

    When Felicity Spicer walks into a room, her 100-watt smile gets noticed.

    Spicer’s charm, personality and poise garnered her the title of 2008 Grant County High School Homecoming Queen which led to an invitation to make an appearance at the Liberty Bowl on Jan. 2 in Memphis.

    “This door is definitely opened by the hand of God because I couldn’t have dreamed of such an honor,” Spicer said.

  • Decorations bring Williamstown family together

    For Jeremy Souder, decorating at Christmas time is a tradition his children don’t ever forget.

    “It’s something me and my kids do together every year. If it wasn’t for them, I probably wouldn’t do everything we do,” Souder said. “But it’s what we do. We’ve got more decorations in the attic that we didn’t put out this year.”

    With their house on Main Street in Williamstown, the Souders decorate and display their Christmas spirit to all who pass by.
