  • City vehicle swiped in Crittenden

    Juveniles out for a joy ride are believed to be the culprits behind a city vehicle being removed from the city garage and found on a nearby street.

    Grant County Sheriff Chuck Dills said the pickup truck was taken fromthe city’s maintenance building between Friday, March 13 and Sunday, March 15. The pickup was found near the Dalton Plaza Apartments and had no damage. “We believe that juveniles were responsible and are hoping someone will step forward and accept responsbility,” Dills said.

  • Burnin' down the house

    Firefighters from Williamstown, Corinth, Crittenden, Jonesville and Dry Ridge held a training exercise on March 14 and March 19 on Main Street and the corner of School Road in Williamstown. Firefighters set fires inside the frame home and used them for training purposes. They were unable to burn the home completely on March 14 due to high winds and a large grass fire they were called away on. The land is owned by Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home and will be the site of a new parking lot to accomodate overflow parking. Photos by Bryan Miles

  • Suspect eludes police after car chase

    A vehicle chase lasted more than 30 minutes on Monday, March 9 and police still didn’t get their guy.

    Kentucky State Police Trooper Chad Mills attempted to stop a pickup truck after one matching its description was stolen from Kelly Drive in Dry Ridge. The truck wouldn’t stop, so Williamstown Police put out stop sticks.

    The truck ran over them and the suspect, who is described as male wearing blue jeans jumped out and ran down Hyde Road.

  • Thrifty

    The Helping Hands Thrift Store is open for business.

    The store’s first official day open to the public was March 10.

    “When we got here at 9:30 a.m. there were people waiting to get in,” said Rev. Wil Jones, co-chair of the Helping Hands Board of Directors.

    Helping Hands was formed 24 years ago in an effort to organize volunteers from churches in the community who wanted to assist families with food, clothing, furniture and cash when available.

    About 15 of the more than 70 churches in Grant County actively support the organization.

  • Crittenden man charged in dynamite theft

    A Crittenden man is in jail after police found dynamite, blasting caps and other bomb-making related materials in his bedroom.

    Christopher Spreder, 26, was charged with receiving stolen property after police searched the home he was living in on March 5 and found items they believe have been stolen from Sterling Mine in Gallatin County.

    Police received a tip from a parole officer that bomb-making materials were located in a mobile home on U.S. 25 in Crittenden.

  • Sex offenders: Where are they?

    A northern Kentucky woman became alarmed and suspicious recently after a male employee made comments about her young children at a Taco Bell drive thru in Cold Springs.

    When she arrived home, the woman checked the Kentucky State Police Sex Offender Registry Web Site and discovered that the man was a non-compliant sex offender.

    Kentucky State Police subsequently arrested the man.

  • Whitton appointed to council

    Clara Whitton is Crittenden’s newest member of City Council. Whitton was appointed to fill the seat vacted by Gayle Cayton. Cayton was chosen to fill the unexpired term of Ralph Byrley who died in February.

    Whitton is a retired manager with 27 years at Cincinnati Bell. She has been living in Crittenden for five years but was born just outside of Crittenden and graduated from Crittenden High School. She lives in Harvesters subdivision.

    Whitton ran in the November election and lost by 10 votes.

  • Dry Ridge couple arrested on drug charges

    A Dry Ridge couple faces drug charges after several law enforcement agencies executed a search warrant at their home Tuesday, Feb. 26.

    Michael D. Mason, 43, and his wife, Wendy Alton-Mason, 34 were charged with first-degree trafficking of a controlled substance and first-degree possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine.)

  • Crittenden man arrested after chase

    A 41-year-old Crittenden man was arrested in Cold Spring early Thursday, Feb. 26 after a high-speed chase that allegedly reached 100 miles per hour and covered 35 miles.

    Ricky L. Dozier was charged with disregarding a traffic control device, disregarding a stop sign, first-degree fleeing or evading police, first-degree wanton endangerment and operating a motor vehicle under the influence.

    Cold Spring Police Officer Jeremy Enzweiler noticed a black Chevy Cavalier allegedly being driven erratically by Dozier around 3:05 a.m. on the AA Highway, according to police.

    “I’m so excited,” she said, as the white van from Gateway Rehabilitation Center in Florence brought her home, one year to the day of an accident that nearly claimed her life.
