  • Home invasion is 'isolated incident'

    Grant County residents should not be afraid inside their homes.

    That’s the message that police want to get across after a family was tied up inside their Dry Ridge home on July 23 by two men armed with guns.

    “This was an isolated incident involving a specific person in a specific house on that specific street,” said Kentucky State Police Detective Fred Scroggins.

    “I don’t believe this was random,” he said.

    Police were called to 15 Ellen Kay Drive, the home of Rex Benson, at 11:30 p.m. regarding a home invasion/burglary.

  • Fire damages car contest winners' home

    Jimmie B. Coulson won a new car earlier this month and then her house caught on fire July 27.

    “Something good will come out of this,” she said. “I’m still blessed.”

    Coulson said she wasn’t sleeping well because of a headache so she went to watch TV where she must have fallen asleep, only to awakened by the clanging of smoke detectors in her home on Chipman Ridge Road in Williamstown.

    “We opened the basement door and there was heavy smoke everywhere,” she said.

  • Bigger, better fair comes to town

    The Grant County Fair started behind the Grant County Courthouse before they outgrew that space.

    Now, the fair has moved to their new fairgrounds on Baton Rouge Road in Williamstown after outgrowing the Grant County Park in Crittenden.

    “We outgrew the park, so we’re going to the new grounds and we’re hoping we can continue to grow,” Patsy Kinman, fair board secretary, said. “You have to keep building on your fair in order to have something different each year. We want to meet the needs of the community.”

  • Road work will close Helton Road on July 27

    Starting on July 27, Helton Road (also known as School Road or KY 3025) will be closed at U.S. 25 and Cherry Hill Lane in Williamstown for approximately two weeks for bridge repairs.

    Trucks must use Baton Rouge Road to cross the railroad during this time.

  • Police need help in solving theft at Cash Express

    Cash Express on Broadway in Dry Ridge was the victim of theft on July 17.

    Dry Ridge Police Chief Rick Kells said a woman, attempting to disguise herself as a man, entered the business at 10:54 a.m.

    When the clerk told the woman she’d need to show a driver’s license to open an account, she handed the clerk a note demanding money, along with a bag.

    She also took the clerk’s cell phone.

  • ‘We lost everything’

    Jeanette Cain took a shovel and dug through the burnt, charred remains of her home Monday as sunlight filtered through singed trees.

    “I found a locket,” she said, holding up a tiny piece of gold that survived the fire that destroyed her home last week.

    Her joy quickly turned to tears and in frustration she threw off her blackened work gloves and she sat on a bank with her back facing the home she and husband, Perry, were refinishing room by room.

  • Saying goodbye

    Just a week after celebrating her 106th birthday, Della Jones died on July 14.

    Jones, of Williamstown, was born in 1903 in Grant County. She attended Williamstown Elementary School for black students before moving in with an aunt to attend high school in Cincinnati.

  • Corinth Marathon robbed, again

    The Corinth Marathon was robbed July 17.

    That’s the second time in less than six months the convenience store/gas station, sitting on Interstate-75 has been robbed.

    Grant County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Maines said a white male, wearing a dark ball cap, T-shirt and jeans, came in the store at 10:11 p.m.

    He showed the clerks a black handgun, told them to look down at the counter and demanded money.

    Maines said a black Chevrolet pickup was in the lot at the time of the robbery. Police believe he got in the truck and headed toward Owen County.

  • Special session addresses budget, incentives

    Legislators adopted three of four proposals addressed in an eight-day special session called by Gov. Steve Beshear.

    The session, which began June 15 and ended June 24, cost $480,000 in taxpayer’s money.

    Lawmakers addressed a $1 billion shortfall for the coming year, while maintaining funding for the basic education formula and higher education, key areas of health care and public safety, including state police, public defenders and prosecutors and local jail support.

    Temperatures are starting to rise again. The heat is back. How can homeowners fight the heat and save money on air conditioning?

    In order for the Northern Kentucky Health Department to declare a heat alert there has to be one of three things: two consecutive days with temperatures at 95 degrees or above, one day with temperatures at 105 degrees or above, or one day with temperatures at 95 degrees or above when the night temperatures don’t go below 75 degrees.
