The Grant County Fiscal Court heard arguments for and against a proposed emergency services taxing district Nov. 20 in the first of at least two community forums.

The pews in the upstairs courtroom at the Grant County Courthouse were filled as the issue of a new taxing district was debated for three hours.

“We’re not asking for million dollar trucks,” said Crittenden Fire Chief Lee Burton. “We’re asking for the funding to do the job that has been requested of us by the people of our districts, by Grant County as a whole.”

Voters will be choosing the following in the upcoming Nov. 6 election:
The top race on the ballot is for president and vice president of the United States. Barack Obama and Joe Biden, Democrats, are hoping voters will return them to the White House for another four-year term, while Republicans Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan hope voters will choose them to run the country for four years.
Other races include:

• Circuit Clerk - Voters will choose between Shirley Wilson, the incumbent, or Tina Beach Melton, her challenger.

Frankfort - As Kentucky’s May 22 primary election nears, the state’s voters are being encouraged to use the state Board of Elections’ www.elect.ky.gov website as a resource for voting. For example, the website can tell voters their polling place and the races in which they are eligible to vote.

The City of Williamstown is moving forward on construction of a new $16.6 million water plant.

The city’s first step was to purchase 55 acres of land on Waterworks Road for $355,000.

This land is at the top of the hill from the city’s water storage tank and adjacent to property the city already owns.

“It was the best location we could have had,” said Williamstown Mayor Rick Skinner.

The city’s current water plant was built in 1964 and has a capacity of producing 2.5 million gallons per day.
