  • WHS Band of Spirit boosters taking fruit orders

    The Williamstown Band Boosters are now taking orders for fruit through Nov. 30. If you would like to place an order, contact Meleasa Sherman at 824-6460 or 468-5681 or any band booster member. All orders will be delivered the week of Dec. 14. All prices are the same as last year.

    20lbs. oranges $19, 20lbs. ruby red grapefruit $19, 20lbs. mixed oranges and grapefruit $20; 23 to 25lbs. gift trio (12 apples, 12 oranges and 12 grapefruit) $30 and 23 to 25 lbs. citrus trio (12 tangelos, 12 oranges and 12 grapefruit) $25.

  • Williamstown looking for volunteer reading coaches

    The community spoke and the Williamstown School Board listened.

    After several people brought up the need for mentors for students at a recent community forum, the district immediately looked for solutions.

    The school board recently approved $3,800 in funding for a program that will coach 20 volunteers on how to help students with reading struggles.

    One to One: Practicing Reading with Students, a program of the Partnership at NewCities, is designed to help struggling readers through the use of a volunteer reading coach.

  • WHS Band of Spirit takes second at national tourney

    In their final performances of the 2009 marching band season, Williamstown competed in the Bands of America Grand National Championship Nov. 13 and 14 in Indianapolis, Ind.  

    The premiere marching event  in the nation, Grand Nationals are held at Lucas Oil Stadium; home to the Indianapolis Colts. This was the first time a Williamstown band has competed in the Grand National Championship.

  • GCHS speech and drama take first at tournaments

    On Oct. 31, the Grant County High School Speech and Drama Team traveled to Bardstown to compete in the second annual Bardstown/Graves County Swing Invitational Tournament.

    In a swing tournament, two schools will host their own tournament simultaneously, allowing students the chance to compete in two different tournaments in one day.

  • WHS Band of Spirit captures first at regional

    The Band of Spirit from Williamstown captured first place in regional competition at Madison Southern High School in Berea Oct. 31.   

    Competing against  nine other bands in class A East Regionals, Williamstown received their highest score of the season and secured a spot in state semi-finals on Nov. 7th.

     Despite the cold temperatures and threat of rain, the Band of Spirit performed an impressive show.   Beechwood, Hazard, and Nicholas County completed the top four bands.

  • Grant County band leaves no doubt

    The Grant County Marching band traveled to Madison Southern High School in Berea Oct. 31 to compete in 4A East Regional Competition.

    The day started for the band at 6:45 a.m. with it raining and cold, but the band was determined to leave no doubt in the mind of the judges that would be seeing them later in the day.  Upon arriving at Madison Southern, the bands schedule was slightly altered as another week of rain caused the competition to be delayed an hour.

  • Knarr named October YPA winner

    Fellow Williamstown High School seniors Kara Caldwell and Kyle Knarr have been friends since they walked the halls of elementary school.

    So, when Caldwell decided to nominate someone for the Youth Performance Award, only one name came to mind.

    “Kyle was the only person whose name just popped into my head,” she said. “He does a lot outside of school.”

  • Gorby recieves achievement award

    Candace Gorby, daughter of Sean and Rebecca Gorby and 2009 graduate of Grant County High School, is the recipient of a $9,000 Achievement Award from Wilmington College.

    Her main activities and honors included: captain of the varsity basketball team, captain of the varsity soccer team, Remke Markets student achiever, National Honor Society and KHSAA academic all-state first team.

    She plans to major in athletic training for pre-physical therapy.

  • WHS Band of Spirit finishes in third place

    The Williamstown Band of Spirit marched in the cold and rain on Oct. 24 at the Boone County Rebel Classic at Boone County High School.  

    Despite the best efforts of the Boone County staff to repair the mud-soaked field, conditions were  harsh.  Williamstown, the first band of the day to take the field Saturday morning, marched their show at 11:15 a.m.

  • McNay named September youth winner

    When Adrienne McNay saw the opportunity to help children, she jumped at the chance.

    McNay volunteered to help with “Hay Read”, a program where second graders from across the county went to Grant County High School for a night of activities that revolved around this year’s book, “Five True Horse Stories.”
