  • Penick wins 'Country Pride' essay contest

    A former Grant County student won first place in a “county pride” essay writing contest. Fourth grade students were asked to write an essay on the topic of “What I like best about Clinton County,” in recognition of the Ohio county’s upcoming bicentennial celebration.

    Jared Penick, a former kindergarten student at Mason-Corinth Elementary School, won first place out of approximately 100 student essays and received a $250 savings bond. Penick’s essay was featured on the editorial page of the Dec. 16 issue of the Wilmington News Journal.

  • Fortner named Youth Performance Award winner

    Miles Fortner, a senior at Williamstown High School, is the Youth Performance Award winner for February.

    His schedule this year includes Advanced Placement calculus and English, as well as two college level classes at Northern Kentucky University Grant County Center. At the end of the semester, Fortner will have a total of eight college credits. His favorite subject is AP Calculus.

    “I’m a math kid,” Fortner said. “Calculus is my best subject and my teacher, Deana Cummins, makes it easy to understand.”

  • Students make music at state level

    Two Grant County High School students have been named to the 2010 Kentucky All-State Band.

    The students, Lucas Hampton, a freshman and Heather Shelton, a junior, were chosen out of more than 800 student musicians at the band competition in December.

    Hampton, 15, is the son of Earl and Rebecca Hampton of Glencoe. He plays bass clarinet and was surprised that he was chosen.

    “Usually a freshman doesn’t get it,” Hampton said. “I was happy that I could represent my school.”

  • MCE captures second at Governor’s Cup

    Three Grant County elementary schools took part in this year’s district Governor’s Cup.

    Walton-Verona Elementary finished first overall, followed by Mason-Corinth Elementary, who finished first in quick recall. Williamstown Elementary finished third, while Dry Ridge Elementary finished fourth.

    Other results were:

    Arts and Humanities - Trenton Jones (MCE), first, Luke Adkins (DRE), second, and Mallory Robinson (DRE), fourth

    Composition - Maggie Walters (WES), second, Kayla Mullins (MCE), fourth, and Caleb Caldwell (MCE), fifth

  • Academic honors

    Covington Latin

    Emily Wolz has achieved second honors for the second quarter at Covington Latin School. Wolz is the daughter of Tom and Melissa Wolz of Dry Ridge.

    University of the Cumberlands

    University of the Cumberlands has announced that Nichole Brooke Mathews, of Dry Ridge, wife of Chaz Mathews, received a Master of Arts in education on Jan 14.

    Pratt Community College

    Megan Zerr of Grant County has been name to the President’s Honor Roll for the Fall 2009 semester at Pratt Community College.

  • Speech and Drama places second at tourney

    On Jan. 23, the Grant County High School Speech and Drama Team traveled to Assumption High School to compete at the 2010 “Rocket” Invitational in Louisville.

    Thirty-Two Schools were represented at the tournament.

    Grant County High School placed second overall behind only Boone County at the tournament. Individual finalists and champions from Grant County High School are:

    Dramatic Interpretation - Ariel Dorsey, second place

    Duo - Kara Pennington and Taylor Godsey, fourth place, and Ariel Dorsey and Cody Murphy, sixth place

  • Band members chosen for select band

    The Grant County Band program had a successful weekend on Jan. 16 as 28 students from the band programs at the high school and middle school auditioned and made the 2010 Northern Kentucky Select Honor Bands.

    Transylvania

    University

    Three Grant County natives and Transylvania University students have been named to the Dean’s List for the 2009 fall term. Homeschool graduate Sophomore Caleb Ritchie is the son of Danny and Kari Ritchie of Corinth. Grant County High School graduates Juniors Katrina Mineo, an anthropology major, and Raven Mineo, a history major, are the daughters of Brian Richey and Paula Richey, both of Dry Ridge.

  • Friendly competition at Williamstown raises money for Haiti

    The devastation of the earthquakes that ravaged Haiti and killed countless numbers of people is thousands of miles away.

    That did not matter to a group of concerned Williamstown students.

    Members of the school’s BETA Club and sophomore class officers organized a fundraiser to help the victims in Haiti.

    What started out as one penny has grown into more than $700 in relief.
