  • Grant County High School - Senior

    Robbie Turner was nominated by Ryan Ray, who refers to him as an “awesome student who always gives 100 percent.”

    Turner says that his favorite class is anatomy and physiology. He is also involved in choir and speech and drama and participates in the school musical and his church’s youth group.

    After graduating, he plans to study medicine and work in the medical field.

  • Grant County High School - Sophomore

    Joey Knobloch was nominated by Mona Lazarus, who says that he is hard working, responsible, helpful, kind and has a wonderful attitude and work ethic.

    His favorite school subject is social studies and after graduation, Knobloch plans to enter the workforce with his uncle.

  • Johnstone named WHS interim principal

    An experienced leader has come out of retirement to become interim principal at Williamstown Jr./Sr. High for the rest of the 2009-10 school year.

    Dave Johnstone of Edgewood will fill the position left vacant after Misty Buchanan was reassigned within the district.

    The 55-year-old retired in September 2009 after spending 20 years as principal in four different schools in northern Kentucky.

  • Students in science and math enrichment build CO2 dragsters

    Williamstown Jr. High science teacher Sean Binder prepares two CO2 cars for a race. Students in science and math enrichment built their own CO2 dragsters to race against each other.

    First place was sixth grader Megan Garrison, second place was seventh grader Caitlyn Treichel and third place was eighth grader Hannah Kinsey.

    Sage Hill is the WMS Student of the Week. She is in the eighth grade.

    “Sage has a super personality...a quote that makes me think of her is...’if you expect the best from yourself, you will meet your goals’...she does,” says Steve Sigmon, her English teacher.

    Angie Williams, her social studies teacher thinks that “she is a blessing to have in class because of her work ethic, personality and encouragement towards other students.”

  • It’s not that easy being green

    You may have noticed yellow and green recycling bins stationed at Grant County Schools—15 to be exact.

    In May of 2009, Kelli Lee’s third period science class at Grant County Middle school brought home a “school in progress” award from the annual Kentucky Green and Healthy Schools (KGHS) conference in Frankfort. The program recognizes schools that take up the challenge to target areas and formulate a plan of action to improve their environment.

  • Academic honors

    Eastern Kentucky University

    Eastern Kentucky University recognized 938 graduates at the conclusion of the Fall 2009 semester.

    The graduates were honored at commencement ceremonies Dec. 19.

    Local EKU graduates include: Sarah Ann Herbstreit of Crittenden, Erica Tina-Marie Anglin of Dry Ridge, Taylor Oren Depp and Chrystal Nichole Varner, both of Williamstown.

    The University of Louisville announced that two local students were among their Fall 2009 graduates.

  • Wilson awarded $6,000 scholarship

    Tyler Wilson, a senior at Grant County High School who is also enrolled at the Boone County Area Technology Center in Hebron, has a passion for cars.

    Wilson won a $6,000 scholarship to Ohio Technical College in Cleveland, Ohio, at the Northern Kentucky Regional SkillsUSA competition held Feb. 28 at Boone County ATC. He competed for three hours, working on mocked-up metal to simulate working on the body of an automobile.

    “I didn’t believe it,” Wilson said of his win. “My parents were happy and amazed.”

  • Babysitting clinic scheduled

    There will be a babysitting clinic and C.P.R. class from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 30-31 at the Grant County Youth Service Center, located behind the Grant County Middle School, 305 School Street, Dry Ridge.

    Patty Tripp, a retired military nurse, will be the instructor and lunch is provided. For more information, call 824-1270.

  • Phillips named Youth Performance Award winner

    The Youth Performance Award winner for March is Amanda Phillips, a senior at Grant County High School.

    “Amanda is involved with many activities in the community and her church,” wrote Ashley Tiemann, who nominated her.

    This year Phillips, 18, has only three classes and spends the rest of her day working as a co-op student in the Grant County Youth Service Center. She is the office assistant, performing clerical duties and working wherever she is needed, including providing childcare for students taking parenting classes.
