  • Butterflies invited to GCMS

    If you can’t take the kids to the wetlands; just take the wetlands to the kids.

    That is what Grant County Extension Assistant Lamar Fowler decided to do when extended periods of rain kept Grant County Middle School students from going on site to the official ‘wetlands,’ dedicated last year and located behind the school.

    From a small town in Holland to a small town in Kentucky, Heleen Giesbers was honored for Excellence in Education at the Grant County Chamber of Commerce banquet April 30.

    “I was just stunned,” she said. “I had no idea and the moment they said about somebody being from Holland, then I basically knew it was me. The nomination and the award humbled me. I really appreciate the recognition especially here, because the teachers here work so much together, so that you feel that everyone deserves that award.”

  • Grant County registers kindergarten students

    The Grant County School District will register students who will attend kindergarten this fall, but have not yet registered. Registration dates will from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 30 or from 8 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, July 19.

  • Pickrell named new WHS band director

    Mike Pickrell knows filling the shoes of Williamstown Band of Spirit director Bob Gregg will not be easy, but he’s up for the challenge.

    The 27-year-old Monticello native has been hired to replace Gregg, who will be retiring after winning five state titles at WHS.

    He has spent the past four years as band director at Keller High School in Texas.

    “I’m very excited to follow Mr. Gregg,” Pickrell said. “He has created a culture of excellence and high standards.

  • Bowlin receives service award for work with MSU alumni

    Brent Bowlin, a 2006 graduate of Grant County High School, is a music education major at Morehead State University.

    While at MSU, he has studied percussion with Dr. Brian S. Mason, Frank Oddis, Ming Hui-Kuo and Mark McCafferty.
