  • Parent elections to be held for Grant County SBDM

    Parent elections for the Grant County High School School Based Decision-Making Council will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 29 in the GCHS Library / Media Center. All nominations must be submitted by e-mail to Lisa McIntosh at lisa.mcintosh@grant.kyschools.us by April 22. Parents of incoming freshman, current freshman, sophomores and juniors are eligible to vote. Questions may also be e-mailed or call 859-824-9739.

  • Cloe is April YPA winner

    The Youth Performance Award winner for April is Mackenzie Cloe, a senior at Williamstown High School.

    Cloe, a self-professed “country girl,” sees springtime a little different than most people—it’s calving time.

    “Right now all the cows are having babies,” Cloe said smiling. “I show dairy cattle in 4-H during the summer. It’s really rewarding and teaches me responsibilities, but basically, it’s just fun.”

    To prepare her cows for a show, she grooms them and works with them, teaching them to walk on a lead.

  • Star Student - Grant County Middle School

    Trisha Lockaby has been selected as the GCMS Eighth Grade Incredible Inca Student of the Week. Lockaby is wise and practical, and exhibits reasonable behavior day after day, while inspiring those around her. She goes into anything with a positive outlook, which makes her a delight to be around. Lockaby is available to help others when needed, and does so in a bright and sensible manner.

    In her free time, she enjoys swimming, singing and hanging out with friends.

  • GCHS Speech and Drama Team place second on national stage

    Grant County High School Speech and Drama Team competed in the 25th annual Smoky Mountain National Invitational Tournament at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Feb. 24-27. There were 36 students from Grant County who attended the event.

    GCHS placed second overall in the prestigious competition sweepstakes, which includes both debate and speech rivalry. Students from 24 schools, from across the United States, took part in the competition. For the overall Speech Sweepstakes competition and the Debate Sweepstakes competition Grant County High School placed fourth.

  • Buchanan reassigned at Williamstown

    Williamstown Jr./Sr. High Principal Misty Buchanan has been reassigned within the district for the remainder of the school year.

    Buchanan, who was in her second year in the district, will serve as Head Start/Preschool program resource consultant.

    The Carrolton resident said she will be returning to Williamstown for the 2010-11 school year as a tenured teacher.

    Buchanan is certified to teach science and social studies for fifth through 12th grade.

    She said the decision for the reassignment was made by the district after her formal and informal evaluations.

    Grant County School Board recognizes straight A students

    The Grant County School Board of Education recognized freshman students who made straight A’s for the first semester at their meeting on March 11. They also recognized Ryan Shy as the student with the highest number of positive referrals from teachers.

  • Williamstown Intermediate

    Kaylee Hicks is WES Intermediate Student of the Week. She is in Leannda Drysdale’s fourth grade class.

    “Kaylee Hicks is an excellent role model in my classroom. She works super hard, and is always willing to help others. She always gives her best effort and is a trustworthy young lady. I have enjoyed having Kaylee in my class this year, and will truly miss her when she moves on to fifth grade. It’s has been a privilege to be her teacher, and I can’t wait to see all that she will accomplish as she grows up,”says Drysdale.

    Gage Robertson is the WHS Student of the Week. He is a freshman.

    Steve Sigmon, his English teacher says that “for Gage this quote fits...’only hungry minds can be educated’” and he is hungry...he wants to learn.”

    Gage’s favorite subject is math and he loves to read “Lemony Snicket.” His favorite things about school are lunch, his friends and math.

  • Grant County High School - Junior

    Rebekah Carey was nominated by Faith Clifton, who says, “Rebekah has wonderful leadership skills, is always respectful, and is an excellent student. She maintains a positive attitude and pushes herself by taking college classes in the evenings.”

    Rebekah is involved in choir, National Honor Society and Big Brothers-Big Sisters organization.

    Her favorite subject is Spanish, which she says is “hard, but fun and different.”

    After graduating, Carey plans to attend UK, followed by medical school.

    The WES Primary Student of the Week is Kyra Bailey. She is in Heather Kightlinger’s kindergarten class.

    “Kyra is an excellent student and such a joy to have in class! She is a great role model for the other students and always helps others in need. She always performs above and beyond what is expected of her academically and is very creative in her work. It has been a pleasure to have her in class this year, “says Kightlinger.
